The talking was the most impressive to me. It felt like cutscenes before MGS.

And honestly, the Rumble Pak was a letdown because I expected it to aggressively shake the controller all over the place. I didn't consider how counterproductive that would be to playing a game at the time, though.

how do the controls translate? but either way that does sound like a good idea, star fox 64 is pretty good for a session.

The original on snes blew my mind in like 93 or whenever it was. I rented a snes to play it as I didn't have one yet. Star Fox and 64 were both pretty cool. Too bad they turned the series into a ground-based game after that

Game still amazes me to this day. No matter how many times Ive run through (and believe me, its been a LOT of times) I still have a blast with it.

How is it on the Wii U? Ive only ever played the N64 cart but I kind of want to get it on the eShop for ease (its a lot easier getting the Wii U set up than dragging out the N64 lol) and for an overall cleaner look (HDMI vs. composite cables) as long as it still runs the same.

100% voiced audio (which was super uncommon at the time).

This is what sets it apart, tbh. At the time, games like Resident Evil and Symphony of the Night had already set the bar painfully low for what voice acting could be in otherwise top-notch games. Star Fox 64 was one of - if not the - first major games to feature competent voice acting, not to mention that it was so seamlessly woven into gameplay as to actively enhance and even drive the experience (the enemy squad leader's increasingly-frantic messages in Area 6 are a good example of this). RE and SotN quickly fell into the category of so-bad-it's-good voicework, but SF64's voicework...was actually good.

Modern gaming - especially Nintendo - can still fail to miss the mark with voice acting (Breath of the Wild immediately springs to mind). But they really knocked it out of the park when it counted the most. SF 64 is an excellent game in its own right, but I don't think it would have been half as memorable without the voice acting.

that's a question for the ages dude

assault got the flying -almost- as good....too bad there's only like 3-4 levels of it? sigh :(

It would of been a good game if it had like 15-20 levels, mostly flying but some on foot and tank for variety. Instead most of the game is on foot and the levels are so damn generic.

The magic is gone. It's likely we will never see another SF game even close to such a level of perfection. A game so good you can play through it literally 1,000 times over 20+ years and can still pop in it anytime and run another one.

in the SNES game their shields only deplete if they're being attacked, and you take too long to help them
also, they always lose their shields in increments of 25%

It's apparently a lot more expensive to make a rail shooter these days. It's why we're not seeing anything of that nature today except for the rare occasion.

I really didnt like the on-foot sections of Assault. Thats what kills the game for me honestly. Theres just so much of it.

It's "expensive" in a sense lazy ass publishers have to pay like half a million dollars for a new game as opposed to releasing a low effort rehash/reskin for next to nothing.

The Forever Train is one of my favorite stages in all of gaming, easily. Area 6 would come close if not for the astronomically-high score needed for a medal.

Kinda a pity 64 is the only one worth a damn every time they've tried to remake it was crap and even trying something different like Assault, Dinosaur Planet and Command were all met with failures and mocking, even Star Fox's crossover with some no names didn't get all that much support. I don't understand, it's like 64 was lightening in a bottle or something.

I legit wouldn't mind seeing a full-fledged Star Fox game with this sort of open-world planet-hopping action.

There's just so much potential there

Star Fox 2 is somewhat like that, but on a smaller scale
