1) People who shoot for fun. They're basically toys to them.

2) People who think they'll need it for some type of catastrophe, like an invasion or governmental collapse.

3) Mass shooters.

Sorry but no. Mass shooters are not shelling out $15-20k for class 3 firearms. TC is being disingenuous, full-auto has been banned since 1986. The only transferable full-autos are ones made before 1986 and are essentially collectors items at this point.

You're mostly correct, but the full auto ban only applies to non-FFL holders, you can only buy a pre-86 full auto if you don't have an FFL, all you have to do is fill out a Form 4 (and wait about a year for the transfer) but if you have an FFL you can buy or make any full auto weapon.

That said, you're right, you're not really going to see someone go though all that to get a full auto to commit a crime.. I can only recall one time in my life when a full auto weapon was used in a shooting and that was the North Hollywood shootout. This lead to the assault weapons ban and the militarization of the police.

Some do, but the process of getting there is long and pricey.

Did you know you can own a fully functional M79 grenade launcher or an M59/66 with grenade launcher system? You can even fire HE rounds from them, but it's about a 250 dollar tax per grenade plus the cost of the grenade and you can only fire them at a special location. The M59/66 doesn't require any special permits... it's just part of the gun, but good luck finding one that hasn't been removed. Plus illegal in CA.

I wouldn't advise trying to use the rifle grenade on the Yugo SKS though... you have to use a blank round and might blow yourself up in the process, so it's mostly a glorified tennis ball launcher.

There's no reason to not allow them either though

Automatic weapons are quite rare and expensive. It takes approximately $25,000 and over a year of background checks and paperwork just to obtain one automatic rifle. They are tracked extensively by the US government.

The number of automatic weapons used in crime in the last 50 years is quite low. In fact, the last documented use of automatic weapons in crime was in 1997, and the guns were illegally modified to be automatic. The last documented time a LEGAL automatic weapon was used in a crime was in 1988.

Wasn't a MAC-10 used in a mass shooting attempt at Times Square just like ten years ago? Don't think it made too much news because the gun jammed because he held it like an idiot iirc.

Just one example that pops in to my head that's more recent than 97. Sure there's more. Doesn't have to have fatalities to be a crime.
