Tossup between serial killers and wrongful convictions. Voted the latter because the former felt like the obvious go-to.

Serial Killers/Murders

People lately talk that you shouldn't glorify killers by even acknowledging them at all, but I like seeing what makes a person take that dark path. I think it's an interesting psychological study into what can make man go over the edge and turn their life into an irreversible mess. And there is so much variety in a lot of cases that I don't think it's worth ignoring them.

Agreed. The Night Stalker Netflix doc was a letdown because they try to avoid "glorifying" Ramirez, but the truth is the guy had such a bizarre upbringing, and was such a strange person in general that it could have been a great way to learn about people like him. Instead they focused on the detective angle, which was less interesting.

I feel like this is avoiding the question though, because it still involves a type of crime that had to have occurred. It would be like asking someone what their favorite type of food is, and offering fruits, vegetables, pastas, etc, as choices, and they answer by saying "warm food".

Have you seen Don't Fuck with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer? It's one of my favorites, because it focuses heavy on the killer. It actually got mixed reviews because the negative ones didn't like how much it talked about the killer. It's such a fascinating story.

not just lately, i've always thought this! serial killer documentaries are a guilty, voyeuristic for me pleasure because i enjoy the same parts you do, but also recognize that the net effect can be gross

If it crosses the line into focusing too much on or being too sympathetic towards the killer i get annoyed. one of the primary motivators for some serial killers and more mass shooters is to become famous. i'm willing to sacrifice a little bit of viewing pleasure to reduce the numbers of attmepted mass shootings or serial killings

Even worse is when documentaries are made about living killers, and it seems likely the killer is probably profiting from the doc in some way. i'm willing to sacrifice my viewing pleasure to keep royalties from rolling in to murderers

in the end, it's not like people are learning how to catch & prevent killers from netflix documentaries. they're learning it from their instructors and/or textbooks and/or material specifically designed for them, either in school or on the job.

I think a lot of places have "Son of Sam" laws to stop criminals from profiting off their crimes this way. As in, the royalties have to go to charity instead.

Though it doesn't stop sickos from showering these monsters with gifts...
