Of course. There are always talented people putting out new music. Some might be harder to find than others, but they're out there.

You haven't stated whether you're looking simply for people who can play well, people who can sing well, people who can write great music or all three. Depends what you individually class as a "great musician".

How about this.

Name some names of musicians of this era who are on the level of MJ or James Brown. It's not hard.

Billy Strings is a generational talent. that dude can fuckin pick that guitar like nobody else, let me tell you. if you don't like bluegrass or jambands, you probably won't appreciate what he does, but holy shit that dude can shred a guitar.

if you wanna check him out, this last show he did was an absolute monster

Real music often gets pushed aside for entertaining music with safety nets in place to control the live sound tho.

No point, all you're going to do is explain why everyone's suggestion doesn't count because of your rosiest of rose-tints. Also MJ and JB ain't great musicians, they're performers.

James Brown played guitar, drums and piano. MJ would sing the melodies to whoever was playing the instrument. But I dont think comparing modern day artists to the legends of yesterday is a good metric to define what would be a "modern day legend". Shit has changed and the definition would change with the times I would assume.

Yes, of course. The difference from a few decades ago is that instrumentalists are largely confined to just contributing to studio recordings now, or producing.

it's also extremely reductive to frame it as though James Brown (or Michael Jackson, or anyone else) was some sort of godlike figure with a level of skill that no one could ever attain.

he was a member of a community, who happened to become more well-known than other members of that community. he was not the only one performing in that style. by whatever metrics you're using to define "good", there were others that were "better" than him, and there still are today.

I really hate the whole concept of a "legend" because it tends to separate individual figures from that historical context

Bruno Mars is about a billion miles above the rest.

Writes tons of music, plays a shit load of instruments, dances, doesn't bury his voice under a thousand layers of digital effects so he actually sounds good live, has been performing since he was a toddler.

Dude is a real artist and literally writes soul and funk music that charts over top of your common brain dead club music that dominates the charts.
