Do you think this cop made the "right" decision?

A Chimpanzee that had been kept as a pet on a family ranch for 17 YEARS was shot dead by an Oregon Cop after it attacked the owner's 50 y/o daughter!!

Buck the chimp was shot directly in the FOREHEAD after biting the woman in the legs, arms and torso

68 y/o Tamara Brogoitti made the desperate 911 call after her daughter who was attacked the pair was forced to take shelter in a basement bedroom

She said "It has attacked my 50 y/o daughter. She needs an ambulance. The ambulance can not get to her. I've locked myself in the basement with her. I can't get out to get my own gun. She's bleeding profusely. I've never seen anything like this. I'm trying to guard her from a 200lb ape so i can't really put pressure on her wound ma'am"

A Sheriff's deputy arrived and shot the animal dead so they could safely get to the victim

They were both rescued and taken to St. Anthony's Hospital for treatment

The sheriff who killed the animal said Buck was roaming near a fence that surrounded the house and concluded the only way to get to them was to put it down

She gave permission for him to shoot Buck and he was shot once ot the forehead and died on the spot

Buck had lived with the family for 17 years. From 2010 to 2019 he was part of an Animal Rescue, a nonprofit who housed and cared for horses but was also part of an investigation for abuse and neglect. Oregon had made it illegal to keep great apes including chimpanzees as pets

But the law allowed exotic animals owned prior to 2010 to be kept until the end of their natural life allowing him to be excused from the ban

PETA says the family created the deadly situation in keepig Buck saying he was a dangerous ape because he lived on the property for so long and warned Tamara created the ticking time bomb by engaging in direct contact with the ape when she refused to transfer him to a sanctuary.

Do you think the officer made the "right" decision?

The cops were called because the animal attacked a family member
The owner gave permission to shoot it

Why is "right" in quotation marks? >_>

What exactly is the other option here? Even animal control wouldn't be equipped to handle it.

Pretty much. I don't see how this could have been handled any better, aside from caring for the chimp better in the first place. Under more ideal circumstances, they could have waited for animal control and tranquilizers and all that nice non-lethal stuff, but the victim was injured and unable to receive the medical attention she needed until the chimp was stopped, so there just wasn't time for that.

Yup. Right decision through and through. If anything I'd be a bit upset he waited until he had permission but I'm certainly not gonna get mad here. Chimps can be extremely dangerous. They are a lot stronger than a human of the same size and their fangs are extremely dangerous. His waiting could have jeopardized the life further.

To be fair, they'd owned theirs *before* a lot of the more high profile incidents so they could have thought theirs was somehow different. Or they might have had it since it was a child. I don't know the backstory, other than the fact they'd owned him for 17 years so it's very likely that they'd had him for nearly all of his life (although male chimps live around 32 years in captivity, so it's not outside the realm of possibility he was somewhere else first)

Reminds me of what happened at Zoo Nebraska 16 years ago.

In this case, though, the chimps were shot by the zoo director, using a sheriff deputy's service revolver. (But why the hell would a cop just hand someone their gun?)

Probably not, but we're talking idealism here. In the real world, I don't think there was ever a chance of the chimp making it out of this alive.

Here they are too. Sometimes they cant even deal with a herd of wandering cows. I think a chimp would be out of their league.

Three chimps shot after escape from Zoo Nebraska
Hilary Kindschuh / Lincoln Journal Star
Sep 11, 2005

Three chimpanzees were shot and killed by the director of Zoo Nebraska on Saturday after they escaped from their cage at the small zoo near Royal in northeast Nebraska. A fourth chimp returned to its cage shortly after escaping.
Zoo Director Ken Schlueter Jr. said that when workers left the chimps cage after cleaning it, one of the padlocks was not clicked shut. Visitors and employees saw the chimps lift the padlock and break out of their cage.
Visitors were immediately moved into the office area and barricaded in for safety, Schlueter said.
They were our first priority, he said.
Deb Collins, spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol, said no people were hurt in the incident, which began at about noon and lasted about 45 minutes.
The Nebraska State Patrol and the Antelope County Sheriffs Department helped zoo employees in their attempt to capture the animals.
Collins said the four animals escaped from the zoo and ran into Royal, a community of about 75 people in Antelope County. The chimps tried to get into a couple of businesses in town, Collins said, before returning to the zoo.
Schlueter said later that only one of the chimps hes not sure which one actually left the zoo and walked about a block and a half into town. The animal opened the door of a convenience store, but an Antelope County sheriffs deputy at the scene shut the door right away, and the chimp returned to the zoo almost immediately.
Back at the zoo, one of the chimpanzees Ripley went back into his cage.
He went back to the place where he felt the most safe, Im assuming, Schlueter said.
But zoo workers and law enforcement officials couldnt get the other three male chimps, who were at the opposite end of the zoo, to join him.
Schlueter said he tried to pacify the chimps with a zoo tranquilizer gun, hitting two of them, but even after five minutes, the tranquilizers had not taken effect on the animals.
Thats when the decision was made, said Schlueter, who ended up shooting the three loose chimps with a deputys service revolver.
Schlueter said he put the animals down solely to protect the people that were in the office, he said. Apparently, the chimps had tried to get into the building where the visitors were barricaded, he said.
When it became apparent thered be danger here, they had to be destroyed, Schlueter said.
The animals are very dangerous when loose, and they run fast, Schlueter said.
Two of the escaped chimps, Rueben and Tyler, weighed more than 200 pounds, and the third, Jimmy Joe, weighed 300 pounds or more, Schlueter said.
Later, people from zoos in Kansas City and St. Louis told Schlueter it was rare for no one to be injured when chimpanzees escape captivity.
Were very fortunate, he said.
Sunday morning the chimps that were killed were taken to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, where their bodies could be refrigerated overnight, Schlueter said. Later, they were flown to a zoo in St. Louis, where autopsies will be performed to determine why the tranquilizers didnt work on them.
People at the zoo were attached to the chimpanzees, which were like pets or children almost humanlike, Schlueter said.
Its going to be a real tough time for us for a little bit, he said.
Reuben was the facilitys first animal when it opened 18 years ago as the Midwest Primate Research Facility.
Jimmie Joe was brought to Royal in 2001 to give Reuben companionship. A $20,000 donation from Johnny Carson allowed the zoo to acquire Tyler and Ripley in 2003 from a retiring animal trainer in California who had used the animals in movies. Carson had donated $55,000 to the zoo several years earlier.
