I wonder if this thing will ever go back in stock. I hope so! I was about to start a replay of Samus Returns on my 3DS since I can't get Metroid off the brain, then thought I might as well start with Zero Mission. But yeah, was going to buy one of these on the spot and forgot they were out of stock. I hope they still make them. Sounds like a really damn cool device.

I've still just been coming back to my Wii U for most retro gaming needs, its virtual console library is just really incredible it makes me sad Switch went a different route.

I'll be crushed when the Wii U eShop is finally taken down.

I'm not hardware expert, but it baffles me that the Switch doesn't have every noteworthy GBA game available on it.

GBA and Switch are the most recent single-screened Nintendo systems. It just makes sense.

I think the real issue is that VC wasn't ever that profitable?

It seems more lucrative for companies to just resell their old popular franchises as new releases.

Pricing was kinda silly, mainly cause of lack of sales

I mean lack of cost doesn't necessarily mean huge profits if no one's buying. Like 90% of PS1 classic sales probably went to FF, MGS, SotN, maybe Crash and Spyro, and the rest of the 265 fought for scraps. And it was probably less profitable for square than the hd ports.

Well right now Nintendo is making zero money on Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion because you can't get them on Switch!

With Dread being a direct sequel my hope was that GBA games would be put on Switch Online soon and Fusion would be available first to catch people up. But on Treehouse they kept saying what a great starting point Dread would be for newcomers to the series so never mind.

Exactly. Such a waste. You have a hyper-popular console with a new upcoming release that will drive interest in the franchise, and what do you do? Absolutely nothing.

Nintendo loses so much money on all the classic games they don't make available for sale.

They're probably not losing money. It's just like andy said - they expect Dread to be an entry point. That means they want people interested in the series to buy the $50 new release instead of trying an older one for $10-20 or whatever.

Also besides normal HD ports, look at the other ways Nintendo is putting out retro games. There's the Nintendo Online library, which is mainly to get people to pay the $20 recurring annual fee, and all the limited edition collectors item stuff - the NES/SNES Classic and the new Zelda Game & Watch, but also the Fire Emblem game and Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

Nintendo isn't that dumb. They know exactly what they're doing.

Fair points. Though I'm sure there are many Switch owners who wouldn't mind spending $5-$10 a pop on Zero Mission and Fusion while they wait for Dread's release. I don't see why playing either of those great games now would dissuade them from playing Dread.

I was interested in getting it when it came out but I lost interest afterwards. Haven't even played a Metroid game since I last replayed Prime in 2014. Dread might be a good opportunity for me to get back in.

Since it'll probably inevitably come up, I have a very good feeling I would not like Metroid: Other M if I ever replayed it and that I was just excited over the game when it came out. I watched ProtonJon stream the whole game last year and was astounded at how bad the story was, albeit with the caveat that sexism wasn't the primary culprit. I ranted in Exdeath's topic about that so I'll spare this thread for now.

This. There's maybe a 10% chance Dread is gonna be better than Fusion or ZM, let alone both. Why would you take 13 years of Metroid hype and waste it on a $10 emulator port, when you could funnel the demand into a brand new game? And THEN you can sell your emulator ports when people are disappointed by the new one.

Probably because you cant. If you manage to collect a Power Bomb before you download the data, it still wont let you use it. If you manage to reach a boss before youre supposed to (currently only possible through tool-assisted play), you wont get their powerup when you kill them and the plot doesnt skip ahead, and the boss will still be there when you reach that point at the intended time.

Why do we think the old games being available would decrease the sales of the new game? That's...generally what happens when a series is about to get a new release. They rerelease the old games as ports or HD versions to build hype and interest towards the new game. This isn't a novel concept or something. So...?

I think you still need to get them, since Adam mentions them in one of his texts. And you need them to get by the weird, puffer fish enemies.

If anyone is looking for a story/series recap of the first 4 entries, I just put a video detailing my feelings on them.

Started recording Prime last night too, excited to start part 2. God I love Metroid. I had started this well before Dread was announced but I'm so pumped for it's release. Managed to snag a Deluxe edition AND Amiibo set too.

Because that's not how Nintendo treats these things and I'm assuming they have data backing up their approach. Think also about how Nintendo rarely ever puts their games on sale and when they do it's not nearly as much as other developers. Everyone knows sales go up if you lower the price but Nintendo doesn't, presumably because they're making more money that way. Nintendo has an interest in selling you the one or two Marios or Zeldas on the system at full price, and they use full-price ports of older games to fill in gaps in the release schedule.

plasmabeam posted...

In this scenario you seem to already be committed to playing RE8. The only impact RE7 could have on sales is pursuading you AWAY from RE8 if you don't like it. There's an argument that less people would buy the sequel if they didn't have access to the original, but I don't think that applies to Nintendo games.

Yeah I don't know about sales being hurt, they seem to be waiting on releasing the Prime trilogy for a closer MP4 release.

I just don't think they have a good way to sell old games at max profit. They definitely don't want to just to toss them in some forgotten online service no one but hardcore fans use.
