that's fucking dumb.
wouldn't it be more appropriate for someone to recite the pledge under the God they believe in?
like would you expect a Buddhist say "i swear in the name of Christ?"

No.

Buddhism can be comparable with a lot of religions. Its more focused on the end of suffering than praising a particular deity and deity. Even the Catholic Church allows Buddhists, in addition to Buddhists allowing Catholics. This has been my experience, anyway - I study cults and religions, am spiritual, and heavily involved in yoga, meditation, and mindfulness.

Granted Im sure you could find people who disagree. But the people I spoke with are priests in either church/temple.

There are also different kinds of Buddhists, Christians, and Catholics as well. One Buddhist sect actually kills other Buddhists. Other Catholics and Christians dont exactly oractice what they preach, either.

ah, i see.
Americans do have their own definition of Buddhism indeed.

I got in so much trouble in school for telling my teachers the pledge could kiss my ass

I feel like I should be able to sue my 1-12 grade experience for damages because they all tried to get me to feel bad and had me in detention or had me stay after school for calling out this shit

and yes, I KNEW America was a shithole at this age.. at the very least I knew it was racist against my people or that my family was at a disadvantage because they were immigrants

Wheres my prize for actively doing my part to make society better? I was labeled a troublemaker in school before it was cool to say America sucks

fuck these Republicans

No one's. If you don't understand what a culture is, and why a multiculture is an oxymoron look no further than Christians and Muslims trying to exist in the same space. It's not hard to understand. Cultures are the reasons borders are drawn. People over there are weird, and for some reason they think we're weird too. This is a prime example. A multiculture is a state of constant infighting.

I just looked up my Floridas laws about this (since I live here, unfortunately). There is literally something called Patriotic Programs laws which require students to stand, even if they arent going to recite the pledge.

What is the point of having that law if the Supreme Court said you DONT have to stand? Its not some gray area.

Speaking as an immigrant to the United States, your culture of extreme patriotism and punishing those that dont say the pledge or stand for the anthem is so weird. It goes directly against what the country was founded on.

When I was in 1st grade, we had a student who was Native American. His parents didnt want him saying the pledge, so our teacher told the class about how this is what the student believes in and we should all honor whatever he wants to do. He (the teacher) used it as a means of explaining the 1st Amendment to a bunch of dumb 1st graders, and how it meant we can say what we want or remain silent when we want, and we should respect each other for it.

That was back in the late 80s, when I would have thought people would be a lot less accepting of these things than in 2021. I wonder if that kid ever had any asshole teachers who werent as accepting of his beliefs.

I do feel we should go back to the original pledge. I dont think kids should be forced to do the pledge but maybe given some incentive. Nothing wrong with national pride provided you have the right mindset. It should be always wanting your country to strive to be the best not simply thinking its the best.

Probably not. The news media thrives on fringe cases and causing scenes rather than providing information these days. I don't believe children are even made to say the pledge anymore in school and it's certainly not required.
