Speaking as an immigrant to the United States, your culture of extreme patriotism and punishing those that dont say the pledge or stand for the anthem is so weird. It goes directly against what the country was founded on.

When I was in 1st grade, we had a student who was Native American. His parents didnt want him saying the pledge, so our teacher told the class about how this is what the student believes in and we should all honor whatever he wants to do. He (the teacher) used it as a means of explaining the 1st Amendment to a bunch of dumb 1st graders, and how it meant we can say what we want or remain silent when we want, and we should respect each other for it.

That was back in the late 80s, when I would have thought people would be a lot less accepting of these things than in 2021. I wonder if that kid ever had any asshole teachers who werent as accepting of his beliefs.
