Do you think Michael is right?

Uber Eats Driver, Smithson Michael made an emotional plea after he received a paltry $1.19 TIP when he drove more than an HOUR to make a delivery!!

He made the video on tiktok sobbing uncontrollably that he was struggling to survive driving for the food delivery service and asked customers to tip in a video viewed more than 1 million times

He said "I wish people knew what it was like to deliver for Uber Eats, Postmates, Doordash all these companies. I just spent an hour driving around for $1.19 tip. I mean would it hurt y'all to tip us, throw us 5 dollars?"

In addition to that he only got $2 from the app for that delivery and said "What's that? That's not even enough to cover gas. How am i supposed to survive like that?"

Michael was living homeless and had already fallen 4 MONTHS behind on car payments and said "Everything fell apart on me and i haven't been able to sustain myself, provide for myself, and these are essential services. I just wish people knew what it was like. I wish they understand what it was like to drive these services"

Many of the comments were sympathetic while others placed blame on the companies saying they charged huge fees for deliveries

People said that these people deserve living wages as well and some even sent donations to him

The company posted a net loss of 6.77 billion for 2020 with a 958 million loss in its 4th quarter as it's still struggling to turn a profit

Do you think Michael is right?

I drove for DD, it's the easiest 'work' I ever did. It should also tell you how much you will get paid by minimum, feel free to decline the delivery if it's too little or too far.

that's a huge loss, at a time when they should be at their most popular. maybe not early in the year while the restaurants were shuttered, but a 1B loss at the end of the year? when their fees are already really high? not to mention the political uncertainty on gig work in general.

i hope i'm wrong, but i don't really see it.

this has happened a few times from the local pizza place. though i have to forgive them to some degree because several drivers don't know the area of this town well.

i try to tip em 2-3$ on top of the delivery fee (for a mile drive from the pizza place).

the drivers don't change the prices to be 1-4 dollars more. so you're giving money to the business and stiffing the worker. not really the best approach imo

thats about my range as well. I dont give them a hard time either. Sometimes its just the restaurant. I also like lukewarm better anyways I have no clue why. Almost all my order have some form of mistake though. I dont even get compensated anymore from complaining about mistakes because its said I made too many.

Restaurants do that because Ubereats/DD/Menufy/etc charge the restaurant for using the service. If you don't want to pay extra either order directly from the restaurant or pick up your own food.

What I'm wondering is, is that number just Uber Eats or Uber's total company loss.

I would have thought Uber Eats to be more popular in 2020, as a lot more people started using delivery services for food and groceries. So it'd make sense if it was Uber's total loss, since people staying home would drastically decrease their rideshare service revenue.

There was no reality where someone was going to tip him appropriately for an hours worth of driving around.

I overtip on Uber, Lyft, Doordash, etc all the time and I think this guy should have gotten a much better tip. But if you get a delivery that far just decline. Itll never be worth it.

Prices are higher here in England, but our staff are paid better.

Tipping is to reward exceptional service, not just regular standard service. Michaels pay for regular standard service would fall under the delivery charge. There are times I have refused to place an order if I think the delivery charge is too high.

I can't speak for Uber Eats, but door dash will say how much you will get paid before you take the order (as the minimum amount you will make, you could get more with a higher tip), as well as how far the delivery is. You can then choose to accept or decline the order.

I haven't even seen a payment below $6 yet (I am in the suburbs so I might get paid more because of more mileage to places, not sure).
