I think people prefer the tip to be included in the base price, and not as some hidden additional cost.

It's his fault for accepting a garbage order. I drive UberEATS and GrubHub full time. I reject garbage orders constantly. Dude should learn how to play the game instead of crying on social media.

And yeah that customer is still garbage for tipping so little. No one should ever tip less than $5.

thats why his pay should be included in the base cost charge and not have to rely on hoping for human kindness and decency. Because such things are in short supply.

All of these gig companies spend their money on marketing and other methods to promote growth of the company and they operate at a net loss

In theory, you are paying enough for the driver, but they spend that money on marketing instead and put the onus on the customer to tip.

I'm gonna repeat this, I also don't think it is at all unreasonable to ask customers to tip $5 at minimum.

If a manufacturing plant is pushing obscene amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere the usual response is to shit on the guy who bought a Chevy Tahoe, as if his individual purchase would offset what bigCorp does.

If farmers are using so much fertilizer that it's generation dead zones in the waters of the gulf of mexico (look it up) the usual response is to shit on the girl who buys facial cleansers with beads.

If slaughterhouses hire psychos that torture animals for fun, the usual response is to shit on people for eating meat.

Isn't it time to hold the actual bad actors, the big fish accountable?

Why the fuck wouldn't uber eats or door dash pay their drivers a living wage? Why are they passing the buck to consumers like that? Shaming people for not being able to afford big tips is a stupid reaction. Go after the delivery companies.

Uber came to dIsRUpT the living of honest cab drivers and now people get paid shit. Now uber eats and door dash came to dIsRuPt the living of honest delivery workers too. Now these people are not getting paid shit, and people are stupid enough to go after consumers instead of them.

we're also being fooled. These companies add a surcharge to the price of the food already. Then they charge the restaurant a fee on top of that. Then they charge us for a delivery fee. They they charge us a service fee on top of the delivery fee.

So they double dip restaurants (they get the money from inflated prices over what the restaurant charges, then they get a cut from what the restaurant makes anyway), then they double dip on us with service fee and delivery fee (what's the difference?) and on top of that, we have to tip.

Yet these companies can't make money? Give me a break. They can't make money because they have fucking adds with Simone Biles, Cardi B and because they need to keep bribing stare and federal lobbyists so their little biz model doesn't get outlawed.

yes.
Sorry I meant the consumers, like the guy replying that if you can't afford the tip then don't order.

Meat eaters should demand that the slaughter houses provide humane killing, for example. Clothing buyers should demand that the clothes makers reduce their carbon footprint. Uber eats and door dash buyers should demand they pay their drivers better.

The consumers are quick to internalize the blame and don't hold these entities accountable

I hate all the up charges, etc., but I always tip a delivery driver fairly over some waiter/waitress. I always do 20%, sometimes 30%. If i don't want to pay, I go out and get it myself... but I usually don't, so I'll pay extra for my laziness lol. I never had an issue with my drivers, and they're very fast. In fact, most get me my order 5 minutes earlier than the estimated time.

I'm just laughing at all this fake concern from people who "care about these workers and feel they should get paid well" also not necessarily being on board with a $5 minimum tip. This is a classic case of "put your money where your mouth is."

If everyone tipped $5 at a minimum then we aren't at all having this discussion about Uber/GrubHub/Door dash not paying their employees well enough.

This is just a terrible take. What experience do you have working these jobs? I've been a full time gig worker for over a year now. I record all of my earnings. I have the data to show this for myself. Drivers tend to make more money with experience.

There is a lot of skill and strategy to accepting or rejecting offers and getting orders delivered as fast as possible. This job is only "random" in the sense that running many businesses has natural ups and downs.

As far as the driver featured ITT sobbing on video over a bad tip, He is likely exaggerating the circumstances and/or (probably both) doesn't understand what a bad order is and why you should reject it.

I have all sorts of criteria for what makes an order good or bad. Dude needs to get a grip on himself and learn his area better.

I'm not going after anyone. I'm stating that tipping $5 minimum on an order is reasonable.

But in your example of only tipping $3 for me only traveling a block that's just fine. There is some grey area here.

I make a decent wage doing this job and I'm happy to do the work. Yeah I'd prefer something more consistent than this, but it is certainly reliable enough that I could do it for another year or two. This isn't a perfect job by any means, but I'm also not getting screwed. I got screwed way worse working for UPS and FedEx.

Acting entitled to it? Lol dude tipping is expected in the service industry. When 90%+ of customers understand this you don't get to call drivers entitled for just explaining to you what a good tip is and what people should tip.

Everytime I try to explain this to people someone gets super butt hurt cause they tipped $2-3 and feel they did the right thing. I mean, I'm just gonna say that is a pretty low tip and you shouldn't feel entitled to great service over that. Nothing more to explain.

Sorry, but delivery food drivers are not exactly in a position to strongarm others. If you want to act badass act badass at the delivery food company, see how that goes. You may demand a $50 tip and a foot massage from customers, but then there are 20 other drivers in the area ready to do the job for a 1.50 tip.

So yes, me tipping $3 for someone who drove a block, while tipping $5 for someone who drove 20 minutes is perfectly reasonable and I am doing the right thing. I am already looking the other way at the fact I am paying a delivery fee on top of a service fee.

Lol what? Strong arm others and act badass? Wtf are you saying? I never said anything close to that. Do you understand anything I've said even a little?

Get over yourself. I've seen many types like you before. You're butt hurt, because it is being explained to you that you are very much on the low end of tippers. I know how much people tip. This information is available to me and not you, because I actually do the job.

You say there are drivers that are ready to do the job for a $1.50 tip and I don't think you understand the reality that orders do end up getting cancelled entirely because no driver will accept them.

You think you're doing the right thing by tipping $3-5 and I'm telling you that there are way more customers willing to tip much better than that so why would I deliver your order?

There are a lot of newb drivers out there. I've delivered many bad and/or no tip orders. It's a live and learn type of deal and I'm better able to avoid those. The only people who take orders like yours are those who don't know better.

Ok, I am having a hard time thinking people tip you $10. A big mac meal is 6$. But also, apparently 10$ is too low, as per your quote above. I guess I better sweeten the deal with a handjob. Silly me thinking a foot massage would suffice lol.

Lol wtf are you saying? Try to make a little bit of sense.

$5 tip is in "fine territory for a 20 minute round trip. $10 for an hour long trip is both extremely unrealistic (very rarely is the delivery address more than 20 minutes away from the restaurant and very often is under 15 minutes)

Where do you get the idea that I'm delivering fast food exclusively? Damn near everything is on the platform from high end restaurants to convenience stores and even pet food stores too. It'd be way easier to name a restaurant that is not on the platform.

Jesus people like you act so above delivery drivers. I'm just telling you that a $5 minimum is reasonable. That is really it. And yeah there is definitely some grey area to that. Deliveries can vary a whole lot.

You aren't a saint for leaving a tip and it seems like that is what you want to hear. You're just doing something in the range of below average to average.

SO glad my restaurant has a 13-15min maximum.

You got to think of it like this. If you live even just 12 minutes away, that a 24 minute round trip, which is probably going to end up taking 30 minutes to deliver and you can't even tip five bucks? Meanwhile, while I am taking your 30 minute delivery (hypothetically), The next drivers in line are getting 5-8 minute deliveries and making the same tip (and quite often more) and still beating me back to take a second delivery before I can even finish my first one.

I'm paying a driver $60 an hour rate on top of my delivery fees and service charge? no way. I live in a city so the driver should be able to quickly get another delivery.

Of course, I never use these apps because of the fees unless it's for work, so I'm not your enemy. Still, I think it's somewhat entitled to expect that rate on top of the app fees. That's like paying a caterer direct, and not even then. If you are getting that rate of tips, good for you.

edit: I realize now that you work for a restaurant. Same deal applies if they charge fees. If not, then yeah it'd be cheap to give less than five bucks.

I deliver for a traditional pizza house. I injured my back several times as a cook ages ago and herniated a disc as a driver 3 years ago. Been driving for 7 years.

I mop floors, clean pans, grate cheese, sweep, clean the grill, dump the grease and lug all the shit upstairs.

This dude doesn't do any of that shit. He sits in his car all day and drops shit off. He also signed a contract with that company and chose that delivery.

Every driver on the planet gets stiffed. It happens to me almost every day. There are people who order everyday that don't tip. It's happened 5 times in a row before. It's probably happened 10 times before idk I've taken a lot of deliveries. The furthest we go is 12 miles away so that's 24 mile round trip. 1.50 fee plus tip goes to me. If someone at the furthest doesn't tip that delivery fee goes up in gas easily with gas at 3.10 here rn. I get paid 6.50 an hour. So for my time I get paid just 6.50 and lose a little in gas. Unlike this asshat I have to do it and yes my time gets wasted too.

The apps like door dash Uber eats and grubhub are calling MY WORK now and listing MY WORK in their apps now!!! And there's nothing the owner can do (he says but he's ACTUALLY URGING CUSTOMERS TO USE THE APPS). A guy got fired this morning over it because we were pissed he's giving our deliveries away and we still have to work! I told a customer about this today and the guy got so pissed he gave me another $80 after the $20 hed already given me. Today was nuts!

This guy, if he has a car and he does door dash etc. and can't make ends meet he should have another job too ffs. Half the drivers I work with do. How tf does he even have a car loan with presumably no credit and no prior job? Shit doesn't add up plus the guys crying on social media. Unprofessional af. There's no chance that dude is gonna throw his back out mopping. He's not gonna burn himself on a pizza pan when the only way he gets his delivery is if he makes it himself. Legit fuck that guy and pretty much any APP driver whining on social media. No shit this job sucks! It only took a bunch of lazy ppl for people to notice? Seriously???

I had a bad day, my friend got fired over these assholes, and this hit home. Sorry if people here deliver for apps but.... I don't like you.

Tldr I'm a driver at an actual store, I have to do actual work, I've been driving far for no money for 7 years, and this guy is weak af

The older I get the dumber tipping seems to me as a custom. It feels like it only continues due to inertia at this point.

Tipping is an outdated concept from decades ago. Prices should rise to pay for delivery drivers, waiters and other services and no more requirement on expecting the customer to pay their wages.

Unionize, demand fair wages! Jesus, this gets repeated so much you could make a sound board out of it.

This is a hilariously bad take.

There is zero chance gig workers unionize. We aren't technically employees. The vast majority of workers are part time. You only ever see other workers when you wait for an order which is not often at all.

There are a lot of cheap ass people so I know that some people do not do right. I normally make sure I do at least 5 dollars .

However some people just don't get it. First the prices for whatever reason are higher when you order from places like doordash. Then you have a delver fee . Some times that can be as high as 7 dollars. Then you are suppose to tip after that. A lot of people wonder why ?

You need to think of it as almost a dollar a minute.
Of all the bullshit I've seen people say about tipping drivers, expecting drivers to be tipped at a rate of $60/hr may be the most absurd. Congratulations.

that's a huge loss, at a time when they should be at their most popular. maybe not early in the year while the restaurants were shuttered, but a 1B loss at the end of the year? when their fees are already really high? not to mention the political uncertainty on gig work in general.

i hope i'm wrong, but i don't really see it.

I know I stopped ordering from them after seeing how ridiculous their fees have gotten. I saw they were charging a $18 delivery fee for a McDonald's that was literally around the corner from me lmao

Idk why people are giving the driver a hard time, dude is literally struggling out there in life. The guy is homeless and people out here are like "WeLl GeT aNoThEr JoB bRo"

He's stuck between a rock and a hard place, probably couldn't afford to reject that order >_>
