You'll ask if something is possible and they'll say "no" almost before the sentence is out. And then you ask why and they get annoyed, and give an impenetrably technical answer and then say it's a stupid idea anyway. And then by the end of the day they've come up with a simple solution that took them a couple of hours to figure out.

This applies in my daily life to IT/software issues but I can almost imagine it happening in every day contexts too.

"Hey Tim, any chance we can get some more milk?"
"No."
"How come?"
"Lactose is a finite resource that is expensive to produce and not good for your overall gut biome. You shouldn't be drinking milk anyway."
*2 hours go by and Tim gets in his car to go to tesco to buy another carton*

I once saw the full scope of this phenomenon when I got a team of devs together to discuss the possibility of building an app for one of our software suites. Paraphrasing, it went exactly like this:

Lead systems architect: absolutely not, we're not doing it. I refuse to allow it.
Older, jaded database dev: if you had an entire team working on nothing else, you could feasibly say a working concept would be ready in 3-5 years, without testing.
Junior intern: What would this be used for anyway? Do these people not have proper computers?
Ex-hacker 4chan type guy: I could bang one together in about 2 weeks I reckon?

(Ended up taking about a year all things considered)

Not an emgineer or anything but a lot of times it's because the person phrasing the question is asking for the wrong thing to solve their problem. I have a graphic designer that works for me that is fantastic at getting to what people "really" want even though she has no idea how to solve it.

I'll often use her to filter questions through to my technical people because her normal job is based around people poorly explaining their goals and her having to ask a lot of questions to get there. Tech folks usually take longer for things to click because the initial question isn't straight forward enough. Different skillsets.

I used to work in digital marketing and now I work in tech so I hope I'm quite good at asking these questions by now. I do note how instantly defensive devs can be, though. Probably for this reason.

So I like to ask the question, pretend to accept the "No, not possible, stupid idea" answer and then just go make a coffee and wait for them to muddle it over for a bit.

Omg this is how my marriage works with my husband who is in IT. Anytime I suggest anything, its met with resistance or shot down. Then I leave him alone for a while and he finally agrees to it/figures it out and will also act like it was all his idea.

Me: How are you, Tim?
Tim: Interesting you ask. Do you specifically mean how? Or did you mean to include why, or when?

From my experience, it's because a lot of engineering is problem solving rather than doing something you already know. So a lot of the time, when problems are presented, we have no idea how to address it initially. You have to figure it out, and you'll need a fiddle period to do so

As far as jumping the gun goes, it's just answering before really thinking it through. It's like how people get the baseball and bat problem wrong because they didn't think it over properly.

It's easier to say no and think about it than it is to say "let me think about it."

Because if you say no, then the other person gets the idea that it can't be done. So if it turns out you really can't do it their expectations are already set.

If you say "let me think about it" then the other person already assumes it'll work and they will get mad if you come back later and tell them it can't be done.

One of the reasons I'll never work on tech industry again

'why are we using 6 different PDF readers across 20 computers'
it wasnt our idea but staff can just request whatever software and their manager okays it
'so uh, maybe we present something about how standardising it all can make it much easier for them to work as a team using the same PDF reader'
That would require training them. We don't train staff. We're the IT department. Not their parents
'mmmkay, I'm just gonna go ahead and make a document with instructions and help out anyone who needs help with it'
*one week later*
Wow the it departments idea of using one pdf reader solved the compatibility issues!
`yeah we now we have to fucking train everyone despite nothanks1 doing all the training. NON-IT are so stupid'

This reminds me of this chick I knew that made 6 figures out of underground at Texas Instruments as an engineering communications person. Basically she got an engineering degree and her entire job was to talk to the engineers then relay that information to the business people in language that roughly gets the point across and they could understand.

I think it's less of a barrier in structures though. You do have your 900 iq types and your 0 sociopath skills types, but buildings are just easier to understand intuitively for more people I think. Big beam is big strong. And really you only have to deal with building owners, architects, and construction people, many of which have familiarity with the technical side of the field.

man, you should be better at your job and direct them properly. You blame the users for you not getting your work done, when you're the one training them to continue asking you by helping them when you're not supposed to. You let your own ego/personal satisfaction get in the way of doing your job and then blame it on other people. This leads me back to my first post
