So from a cursory search it seems like you can easily install a PS3 game patch via USB drive, but any DLC would require soft modding. I assume the same goes for PSP and Vita.

Wow, my plan to buy a PS3 at the end of its lifecycle so I could just play and download games for it ad infinitum is not working out well. PS3 games aren't too bad, but I should definitely grab any and all PSX and PS2 titles I want.

I just pulled out my PS3 to play the Ratchet and Clank series; guess I need to buy up all the other old games I've been intending to get around to soon. Will we still be able to download what we've purchased?

Yeah, I'm really hoping this isn't true. Shutting down the PSP store is okay, but the PS3 store needs to stay open until we get a new console with a similar digital library. Likewise, the Vita store needs to stay open until we get another Sony handheld which can play PSP and Vita games digitally.

This isn't that big a deal for PSP and PSV, because I doubt there's anyone still using those systems who hasn't softmodded them years ago.

Not sure how reliable alternate content acquisition methods on PS3 are though.

Seeing as the disc reader on my PS3 sucks (and I've already had it repaired once), once this happens it'll basically limit my library on the system to "what I have."

The biggest hit is going to be those PSOne Classics though...

Now this is something I don't get
They close the store, so you can't purchase games, sure
But they keep the servers up, allowing you to redownload old games

So...what exactly are they saving here?
If anything they are only hurting themselves by keeping the servers up AND not getting money for new purchases

They don't have to pay to run the store anymore. There are costs associated with running an online store beyond just having a server. Customer service, refunds, licensing, etc..

There are also opportunity costs. Every customer hanging around on the PS3 platform is someone that could instead be spending money on PS4 or PS5.

They certainly have thought this through and believe it is in their best interest to do this.

So with DLC no longer being available, in theory, are there any "must-have" DLCs that one should pick up now before the store closes? I can add the Mass Effect 3 Citadel DLC to the "if you don't download this, it will completely ruin your enjoyment of the game" list.

The Act IV DLC for Asura's Wrath resolves the massive cliffhanger the base game ends on, and the story is incomplete without it.

PS4 doesn't have any PS1 games.

PS4 has some PS2 classics, but there's actually very little overlap between the PS2 classics available on the PS3 and PS4.

The PS3 doesn't have Dark Cloud 1/2, Wild Arms 3, Ape Escape 2, Parappa 2, Rogue Galaxy, Mark of Kri/Rise of Kasai, etc..

The PS4 doesn't have SMT/Persona series, Suikoden 3/4, Grandia 3, God Hand, Contra Shattered Soldier, Gradius 5, Katamari Damacy, Psychonauts, Fatal Frame series, Grim Grimoire, Stella Deus, etc..
