Its not a funding issue

Well its an issue that needs to be solved. At this point, you might as well try random solutions and see what sticks. Honestly, these issues in the big cities if our country should be a very high priority for us to fix. That is my opinion anyway

Thats fucking insane. There has to be some solution for these kind of problems. More funding might help. Hell, raise taxes in the country if that money can help. These big cities need major help and its time we really put major effort into it. What is the solution? I have no fucking clue. Something needs to be done though. Kids with no future just starts a cycle of future kids with the same problems or worse.

First things first, they need to solve the rampant dismantling of the nuclear family. If the kid had his father in his life, he'd have a positive role model as a reference to what kind of man he should aspire to be, another person to pressure and laydown expectations and discipline on, and there would be more income coming into the house so mother wouldn't have to overclock on hours and be able to do her job as a mother.

Unfortunately culture perpetuates too many toxic trends that would prevent the traditional nuclear family from being the norm.

Oh no, we don't get to hear more idealistic dreck from the clown who thinks we should throw even more money at the problem.

What do you want to do? Send them to prison? Make them work the fields? Say it's all their fault when they are no different than any other human beings, it's clearly just a broken situation and a broken system. All you have to contribute is blame, sniping, and calling people bleeding hearts while another generation of an underclass is created.

This happens because too many kids with issues are all in the same area. Those issues stem from poverty. When too many of the kids are in a situation where they would need extra help to make it, the whole system collapses. The areas they live in are racially and economically segregated, unsafe, low opportunity, and everyone is going through various degrees of the same thing. People do what it makes sense for them to do and a situation has been created where it made sense for the subject of this article to do what he did and for half of kids to do even worse.

How many times do you have to be told that they are already throwing money at these kids? Your worthless fucking policies have already led to this utter failure. You're just going to bitch about any suggestion of a need to change these kid's home cultures as being racist, so who gives a shit. Keep blowing taxpayer money on the inner city kids. You might as well be burning it to heat their houses.

@ThePrinceFish will never acknowledge this. It's all about whatever lets him dogwhistle about culture and disparage individuals for being on the ass end of American society. How it got that way never factors in. It's all about moral failings and failures of will from groups that just can't get it together no matter how much you spend on them.

The perpetually suffering strongholds are dealing with the consequences of centuries of racism and classism in a country that purposefully packed POC into opportunity starved ghettos and then got mad at the people in them for not thriving.

So yeah, it's not easy to disentangle that when the segregation and classism still exist, largely unabated in reality due largely to people like yourself. I don't believe you're some type of KKK member or Neo-Nazi. You're something much more common that does much more harm in practice: someone who denies why things are the way they are, blames the victims, and then supports policies that continue to do harm.

There are a variety of factors at play. A large share of school funding comes from local sources, which mean that lower income areas have fewer resources available as a general rule. That's problematic because those are the areas with the most need. But there's a big issue with construing this as a failing with the education system. There are much bigger socioeconomic issues at play. Concentrated poverty is the root cause, but too many people erroneously attribute this to a cultural thing. That's stupid. Many different institutional forces are at play, including the history of redlining, the criminalization of (black) poverty, and the interaction of those two things with urban renewal and decline through the 20-21st century.

The school funding explanation falls apart if you google the per pupil funding for Baltimore public schools. They get way above the national average.

I get that they may have costs that suburban and rural districts just dont need to worry about but this idea that inner city schools are underfunded and decaying is dated in most cases and some of the best funded districts in the country (dc is the prime example) have some of the worst test scores.

They serve as a sad example for the rest of the country. "What if we doubled the funding for our worst performing g district in Colorado". It probably wouldnt do much if you look at Baltimore or DC public schools as an example of a district with double the funding and absolutely horrible metrics.

This topic truly hurts to read....

How could you guys read this and say "just expel the trash" "What was his dumbass mother doing anyway?", "he shouldnt have skipped class", "Where is his dad?"

I mean, did you forget that we are talking about a human being here??? Look at the pictures... his mother aint no old woman, she probably came through this same broken system and not that long ago... nevermind the father, wherever he may be (because since it Baltimore he could be running the streets or in a gang bc what else there after coming through this school system, or he could already be in the ground)

But in all serious read again what it says... the kid is nearly in the top half of the school a ZERO POINT ONE-THREE GRADE POINT AVERAGE that is fucking insane... and goes well beyond "shoulda just went to class".... I had to re-read the title 4 times because its so ridiculous that I thought I misunderstood the meaning of GPA...

Also, for those shitting on the mom, she didnt say that she thought the kid was doing well even though he was failing, thats what the writer wrote... she said: I'm just assuming that if you are passing, that you have the proper things to go to the next grade and the right grades, you have the right credits, said France
Which is something you are likely to do when you work three jobs and have two other (i assume younger) kids to take care of as well

No child left behind
That's the root of the problem ironically, instead of giving ssmchools incentive to say "why are all these kids doing bad?" It goes "well, your failure rates are high so no more federal funding."

And as a Maryland resident, Baltinore schools have been a dumpster fire for years. At pretty much every level of the system. There was one year they said they didn't need an aid grant from the state, then several months later were bitching they needed money from the state to fix the heat in a bunch of schools. Before that, and still probably, most of the schools didn't have ac either.

Really, as I read that, it seems like these students they're pushing through have bright prospects in the Baltimore City Public Schools system.

https://www.bestplaces.net/cost_of_living/city/maryland/baltimore

Provide the poorest folks in Baltimore with something like $900-$1200/mo like how Stockton is doing $500/mo currently. This will stop situation's like the mother's where she has to work three jobs to make ends meet for her family, covering the cost of many essentials.

Improve and expand government housing. Government housing is generally scaled off of income and leans more towards the cheaper side. I moved out to Tennessee to be with my dad while looking for a place, and ended up applying at the Housing authority -- I am paying less than $200/mo for a three bedroom, granted I am in a smaller town.

Issues like these are systemic. It effects poor people, and especially poor minorities even more than myself. Ultimately, if we can fix the systemic issues fix we can then focus on reforming education and make sure that the budgets are used effectively as well.

This is really sad, but it is a multi-faceted problem. At its core is the misconception that education is the way to address the issue of poverty, when it really isn't. It's the other way around. You want kids to be educated, give them and their families a way out of poverty first. Students in upper-income neighborhoods do not struggle with these issues, and it's certainly not because they're smarter.

Yeah, don't look to the city government to do that. They're just as worthless and corrupt. The big story on Fox Baltimore and probably the other three affiliates right now, next to the schools, is Marilyn Mosby, States Attorney for the city, being caught up in corruption and misuse of public funds for overseas travel. No, really, explain why a city official needed to fly to Portugal. She also used the 2013 riots as a chance for political recognition more than anything.

And this is a recurring issue in Baltimore. Before Mosby, the Mayor was in a scandal, and still is, over something to do with her terrible children books and using her position to sell them. Before that the last Mlmayor got shit on for how she handled the riots, but she at least made it to election to be voted out. She got the job from someone who was convicted of embezzlement. And she got the job when O'Malley resigned to be state governor.

The whole city leadership needs to be tarred and feathered out and someone needs to rebuild it.

Everyone here saying they need to put more money to the school are clueless. If you ever grew or stayed a decent amount of time in those neighborhoods, youd know there are many issues that I truly dont think the government can fix. Its unfair blaming the teachers or even the kids. The best suggestion Ive seen was the person who said to give each kids partner some money. Instead of throwing so much needless money at the school, send them to the partner and perhaps it can help them provide for their kid and less financial trauma to the family. Perhaps an financial incentive for attendance or doing well in school. It wont fix everything but itd definitely be an improvement

The system is broken everywhere. Schools are rewarded for passing students. Not raising quality students. And if a kids problems are internal due, say, to a dysfunctional family as it is for most kids in such areas there isnt much they can do then regardless.
