Ha, maybe. Of the ones I've seen, I don't think my opinions deviate too far from the norm. Winter Soldier would probably be my #1, but after that I don't really know. I considered watching the movies that I hadn't seen yet so that I could participate, but I was (and still kind of am) suuuuper burnt out on the MCU after Endgame and I didn't want to be too much of a downer. I still haven't even seen Far From Home, and I fucking love Spider-Man and Jake Gyllenhaal! Regardless, I did have fun lurking the topic and reading all the write-ups, even though everyone's overall enthusiasm makes me feel like an out of touch, jaded old man shaking my fist at a cloud.

Honestly, at this point, it'll probably still be a few years until I have any desire to watch another Marvel movie except Into The Spider-Verse 2, that shit's gonna be tight as fuck.

Excellent job compiling and hosting all of this, Inviso. Thanks for doing it! It was fun. I'm glad to have finally done a Gauntlet; there were a few I missed out on in the past that I wish I had done.

Infinity War truly dominated. 21 out of 32 people had it in their Top 3! Not surprising I guess! Glad it won though. At the start of the list, I was concerned that Endgame was going to beat it at the Final 2.

To me it shares most of the themes I look for in a MCU film the most. It has plenty of good action scenes, a gripping villain, a good amount of comedy, and stunning visuals and a neat setting for that underground world. I also felt that its themes (Thors power doesnt just come from his hammer like earlier movies suggest, Asgard is its people) were really strong. Its the perfect little MCU package IMO.

The other two movies in my top 3 are close, but Winter Soldier felt more like a spy thriller that was super fun but not necessarily a superhero movie and Black Panther is a little more serious in tone compared to other MCU movies, although its music and themes are great

I could go on forever about this movie and its sequel, but one last thing I want to highlight about this movie is how they brought back the Avengers theme into peoples consciousness. It was composed for The Avengers but was pretty underutilized in it and its sequel, and I know there were people criticizing the unmemorable scores in the MCU. Well, I dont think people are saying that now. While not quite on John Williams level, the theme was used beautifully in these movies and helped to make Thors arrival in Wakanda an unforgettable moment.

I had completely forgotten about that. Oh my god, it was so good. Like... Phoenix Wright Case 3-5 bringing back the first game's objection music.

My other major gripe is along the same lines - Xandar, which probably had the highest defenses for their Infinity Stone, was defeated first. (And off camera!). Is it too much to ask for even a little space battle scene in the biggest movie in the MCU? (Actually, going into Infinity War I was expecting something more along the lines of the Guardians having to break into the vault on Xandar to get the Power Stone out before Thanos could attack the planet.) Those two things and knowing that it was going to end on a cliffhanger just barely knocked Infinity War out of the top 3 for me.

I hope that if we ever get a Nova movie, like, we get this. A Deep Space 9 intro with Wolf-359 where the origin is less how hero gets his powers and more how hero managed to survive and be one of the last Xandarians left.

Oh god. OH GOD!! We get like a full fifteen minute intro of Thanos just wrecking through Xandar like the attack on Hoth and everyone's trying to escape, and a bunch of Xandarians we've been following make it out alive, and it's a good note of success and respite. Then the character wakes up to alarm bells and the ship is about to crash and everyone else we've come to like as a team is just gone. Dusted. He has no idea what happened or why and as far as he knows he's the last of the Nova Corps.

I don't have a clue how the movie would go from there, and I can't think of a good way to do a Richard Rider movie that doesn't feel too close to Superman, Green Lantern, or Captain Marvel.

I currently have two lists with 30 movies each. Westerns 1 and Westerns 2. The next list we do would be Westerns 1. But we have options! I can condense all the most important ones together into one list of 40. Or I can keep the split if 30 is preferred per project.

What would you all prefer? Im down for either.

For reference, these are my planned lists:

My Darling Clementine (1946)
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

3:10 to Yuma (2007)
Django Unchained (2012)

I think it's a big ask to have people watch 30 movies in a month. I'm assuming you're thinking a month. I'd like to participate but it's simply too much of my free time to do a movie a day.

There's also the possible issue of whether all of these are available on streaming services as easily as most of the Marvel stuff is.

If it was me, I'd aim for around 12-15 max for a month. Maybe do a month of Westerns, then a month of something else, then go back to Westerns again, etc so that people don't get burnt out.

On the nomination side, I think there's value in having multiple versions of a movie. It's been years since I watched them but I remember both versions of 3:10 to Yuma having a very different vibe to them, to the point where I could appreciate the differences instead of thinking of one as "canonical".

I think it's also would be neat to directly compare the different takes on Wyatt Earp/Doc Holliday/Gunfight at the OK Corral. There's been at least 5 or 6 over the last 60+ years.

Im gonna give 3 months to complete the list of 30, dont worry. Plus extensions if needed.

Im also gonna try to provide updates during that three months as to what services have the movies for either free or included with the service (Prime, Netflix, etc).

As for the movies with multiple versions, some of those are tied up in other projects. For example, the newer True Grit will be in a future Coen Brothers project, and the older 3:10 to Yuma will be in a future Books Based on Movies project.

It's absolutely not. Ultron is one of the blandest, most pointless movies in the entire franchise. Ragnarok is fun, funny, colorful, has a great cast of interesting villains who are just enjoying themselves in their roles (less so Karl Urban, but whatever) and has a kickass soundtrack.

Can't even imagine what one would prefer about Ultron

Ragnarok pretty much beats it across the board. Better action, better story, more relevant to the franchise, better humor (by a long shot), better comedic TIMING (as in not making jokes at literally every possible moment).

Even if Hela being hammy hurts Ragnarok for you Ultron is a gawdawful villain who can't really be much better

This is my biggest issue with participating. The lists have a significant number of movies I havent seen yet, and just looking into it superficially, a bunch of them arent available on any streaming platforms. So while Im interested, Im not sure how I would be able to see all the movies.

better story

disagree.

STRONG disagree. age of ultron's humor wasn't great but inoffensive, for the most part. ragnarok had a handful of jokes that were truly funny and a whole bunch of jokes that sucked. in a movie that tries really hard to be funny, that's pretty freaking terrible. i'll take bland humor over bad humor.

also, i think you're exaggerating how many jokes AoU had. i didn't feel like there were that many more than the amount of jokes in ragnarok...? i feel like if the movie is as joke-filled as you're making it out to be, it would have bothered me much more than it did. maybe i should rewatch it sometime to see if it's worse than i remember it being.

agree with you on the villain thing, though. if anything, ragnarok wins on this front. ultron and hela are both crap but at least ragnarok has grandmaster. he's awesome.

I don't know which one tit for tat has a higher density of jokes, because as I said Ragnarok is, at its heart, a comedy movie with Marvel coating on it. Which is fine for what it is.

But I can remember a lot more jokes or quippinesses done at inappropriate times in Ultron, and I can remember a lot more actual funny moments in Ragnarok. Ragnarok generally knew when to turn it off and be serious, that stupid rock guy at the ending aside. Ultron literally never turns it off. The villain himself is bantering nonstop. As said earlier in these topics a hydra guy makes a joke after being shot.
