Inside and Undertale with perfect scores seems pretty haughty. Granted I can't really think of many flaws with them per se but they're just low depth games that hinge on "artistry"

Arguably, the same applies to TLoU. Though depending on your point of view, that might not include the "not many flaws" part of your statement.

I could rant all day about how God of War is the most overrated game of all time. And I'm stuck on a call with an old dude rambling about nonsense at work, so I'm gonna do some of my own ranting.

The story is a macguffin quest. They don't even explain why we're supposed to care about why the dead mom's ashes need to go up a mountain. Flush it down the toilet. Who cares. Then we go up the mountain? Ope a cloud is in the way. Try again? Nope gotta do some other mini macguffin quest in order to complete the larger macguffin quest.

The character progression is just.... preposterous. Kratos goes from huge ass to slightly less of an ass. But the kid... one minute he's sickly, one he's not, he finds out he's a God and immediately turns comically evil, then just as suddenly changes back to not evil. He hears voices at one point, and then that point is never addressed again?

The text is too tiny, there's only two or three boss types that you fight over and over and over again, the rpg elements are convoluted, the boat is tedious and some of the side quests are just stupid. Spend hours in a poisonous fog planet, and when you finally beat it, you get anti poisonous fog armor? Gee thanks

I hate everything about God of War. Except for the graphics. It's pretty. But I spent 30 hours of my life waiting for it to get good and just hated it more the more I played

I voted for The Last of Us 2. Another "Sony formula" copy/paste job where everyone sits around enjoying the smell of their own farts. And I'm not saying this from some troll POV because girls kiss or because I hated Abby or whatever the heat was. I think Abby is a babe and she's fucking awesome, for the record. Grand Theft Auto IV sucked too, but it's still better by virtue of not essentially being part of a pleb formula that took over first-party PS game development for 2+ generations.

Persona 5: Royal
Super Mario Galaxy

These did not deserve their 10, but are still objectively worthy of some sort of good score:

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (yeah, it is partly to blame for the formula I hate taking over, but it hadn't gone horribly awry yet and was still passable on PS3)

Uncharted set this framework standard, did well, and then gradually almost everything made in-house adopted it. it's fucking boring and derivative. no other companies have so many eggs in one stylistic/gameplay flow basket. idiots gush over the low-hanging fruit like they're all masterpieces, but the lack of originality requires willful ignorance to ignore.

Definitely one of these, fortunately the Other option covers them all.

Skyward Sword was so undeserving of a perfect score that I still firmly believe it was a review bought and paid for by Nintendo. IGN called it a "masterpiece". That's insane.

But I've also heard TLOU2 was total dog shit. I didn't like TLOU1 at all, so I didn't bother with the sequel.

TLoU, easily.

As I said in another topic, gaming can learn a lot from the Yakuza team of all teams if they want to do "woke" right.

Just follow Rina's hostess story in Yakuza Kiwami. It's optional, organic, doesn't grind the entire game to a halt for the message like the second act of every CW drama episode, and tells a very strong story without squick.

But I've yet to see a gaming journo looking for clout even mention it.

You have an incredibly odd interpretation of that word.

I liked Inside and Undertale fine but they're definitely undercooked as typical games. Undertale at least has a fun cast and dialogue moments, Inside is just taking itself too seriously 100% of the time.

Haven't played The Witness but if it's anything like Braid then it's probably generally uninteresting gameplay hiding under the veneer of novel mechanics. I don't know how to describe it but there's just a structure to games like that which feels off. Imo the best games make you do novel stuff without even realizing it. Like the climbing and gliding in BotW for example, maybe not the most fully original concepts, but they're not an obvious gimmick, and were put together in such a way that it was a game changer.

I agree with Mead. While Undertale wasn't my cup of tea, it did seem like a really good game. And people seemed to love it... I enjoyed Inside and what I played of The Witness...

Honestly I think Pacman CE DX may deserve the perfect score more than any other game on the list. It perfectly distills pacman, and that style of "old school hi score" gaming down to its flawless essence. I can't imagine there being any way to improve on its formula. While a lot of those other games are fantastic, I don't feel that you will be able to look at them in 5,10, or 20 years and still confidently say they are the absolute best that genre or even series has to offer.

Maybe. But I dont think about the far future when rating games. I think about game during the present and how they are for the time they are made...

Pokmon Red and Blue dont deserve a 10. Sure they are influential and kickstarted a long-lived franchise, but they were very full of bugs. I just dont know how such a game could be considered perfect.

I don't think bugs should really count positively towards a game in any serious evaluation, but I agree they shouldn't really count against it if they aren't something the average player would frequently run into and/or don't ruin the experience.

I love MGS V. Got like 300 hours in. Not a perfect game.

Of the ones I've played, I liked GTA 5 the least. I feel it has the characters aren't interesting, the story isn't meaningful, and the gameplay is just decent.
