https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/17/facebook-will-ban-australian-users-from-sharing-or-viewing-news.html

Facebook on Wednesday announced that it will no longer allow publishers and users in Australia to share or view news articles in response to a new media law in the country.

With the new legislation, the Australian government seeks to require online platforms like Google and Facebook to pay news outlets for displaying and linking to their content.

Facebook said it has decided to restrict publishers and Australian users from sharing and viewing news content in response to the new law.

This means that Australian publishers will be restricted from posting news content on their Facebook pages. News stories from international publishers will not be viewable by Australian Facebook users. Australian users will not be able to share or view news stories on Facebook, and Facebook users worldwide will be unable to share or view news stories from Australian publishers.

Facebooks decision to ban Australian news stories from its service stands in stark contrast to Google, which announced on Wednesday that it has struck a revenue-sharing agreement with News Corp. so it can continue displaying news story links from the company on its services.

The company said it will continue to provide Australian users with accurate information from its growing list of information hubs. The company will also continue to work with the Agence France-Presse and the Australian Associated Press as part of its fact-checking program.

In this case they've taken a stance more aggressively harmful than Google.

That's stupid.

I can understand for Google - Google themselves are directly providing a service that relies on these news articles, published by Google themself.

But in the case of Facebook, it's either the publishers themself, or individual users, who are sharing them - not Facebook themself. Why should Facebook have to pay for that?

But isn't it free advertising when you share a link to a news article and then five of your friends click on it to read more?

I feel like this is just going to hurt the media companies moreso than generate additional revenue for them lmao

If it's just a title with a link, yes. If it's sharing the full article not so much.

Take this thread for example. I read the article without having to visit the CNBC site, so Gamefaqs is the one who made money off this content created by CNBC, while they get nothing.

I see your point, but then how is a site like Facebook supposed to determine that content posted on their service was copied from a news outlet? And which news outlet?

I see the intent of the law but it seems really ill conceived.

I guess it's technically possible by automatically scraping news outlets and comparing them to posts made. It's a huge task for Facebook to set something like that up, but ultimately not more difficult than the sort of content matching Youtube does for copyrighted music.

I see the intent of the law but it seems really ill conceived.
Yeah agreed

Jenny and I spoke last night and she said to me, you have to think about this as a father. What would you want to happen if it were our girls?" he told reporters.
Jenny has a way of clarifying things. Always has. And so, as Ive reflected on that overnight and listened to Brittany and what she had to say.

Human Rights Watch's Australia director said Facebook was censoring the flow of information in the country - calling it a "dangerous turn of events".

So it's "censorship" if Facebook doesn't broadcast their news, but it's "exploitation" when they do because they're not being paid directly by Facebook. Sounds like a real racket to me.
