Recent interview said the reason he wasn't in Shadowbringers is they didn't have any good ideas for him. But did confirm he will be back for Endwalker!

To be fair I am consistent in that I have always said if I did play one it would be XIV, and regardless there was the barrier that I just don't play games with mouse and keyboard, which XIV also solves.

I spent a solid 20 hours trying to play WoW a while back and it was just SHOCKINGLY uninteresting.

Quick note so you don't get totally blindsided - all (except for like one dude) the voice actors are changed after ARR. I'm still not sure why, probably something to do with licensing. They've stayed consistent since then. I would say that the voices are generally either a sidegrade or a mild improvement, although it took me some time to get used to them.

There's also Alisaie, who has a pretty good voice performance in subsequent expansions and has maybe the worst modern dub performance I've ever heard in her scenes in ARR. She really brings the ARR average down!

My understanding is that they swapped to a London based studio instead of the LA based one used in ARR. If I would hazard a guess, I'd say they wanted to have actual British actors for the English voice track rather than ask native American actors put on an accent.

And yes, ARR Alisaie was incredibly rough.

A lot of WoW's appeal is only if you have a static you get to laugh along with as you progress. I keep a little document of shit we say when we start getting punchy. An excerpt from last night was a 20 minute conversation about Denathrius and his knaifu.

I think I'm like 17 and 4 on those, but now I'm up to 14 on my second set of ARR ones

Luckily I just got SAM to 70 so maybe I can trick myself into thinking the exp is worth it to get some extra motivation for my SB memories...!

I've gotten in fairly often in roulettes, so you might just be running into bad queue timing.

Yeah it ended up being 22 minutes, not the worst considering it said over 30.

If you ever have queue time problems, pick up a healer or tank class and level it up. It's basically a way to force quick queues.

Then, just dont do as badly as your cohealer/cotank (and you will quickly learn who boosted their classes and avoid the danger signs)

Astro not so much this expac imo, went from my favorite healer to least favorite, I hope they rework it again in Endwalker

I've sensed that a lot of previous Astro mains are upset about the way cards were changed. As someone who only picked it up in SHB, I don't have that letdown, and I've found myself enjoying it as a job maybe more than the other two. The 1.5 cast time on your damage spell combined with the surplus of powerful OGCDs just feels really smooth to play.

It's the card rework + removing all of the interesting time/buff manipulation it had previously.

Also I'd personally say the OGCDs are pretty bad on Astro compared to the other two but I'm not trying to say you shouldn't enjoy it if you don't, just my opinion.

i still have a very vivid image in my head of a tank using hallowed ground, sentinel, and rampart right before pull, and starting with provoke

Anyone still complaining about the card rework is just whining to whine imo. You only ever wanted to play the Balance anyway, so making every card have the effect of the Balance was the objectively correct change to make.

I realize they kinda have to for story purposes, but kind of silly that the best mount in this game, IMO after looking at the list, is the one they give you for free at then end of 2.0.

iirc theres a quest in mor dhona that opens at some point that lets you do the cannon and gunfire (visual only, no actual damage) with that mount in the overworld

That was kind of my impression as well from hearing how they used to work. The current system doesn't have tons of depth but whatever, if it was more complex I wouldn't be able to handle it while also doing mechanics.

I did hit lv80 after Sleeve Draw got reworked, which made me sad since I liked the idea of chain-firing off cards. Would've been fun to do, but I get why they felt it was too dextrously complex.

I just started leveling AST a week or two ago and I have a hard enough time not losing partial gcds to applying cards as is even with only two card effects; I cant imagine doing it if I really needed to think about who to give them to...!

I like the matching game on new AST but I do miss the old one. I think it was better to have more effects, especially once they nerfed the Balance into the ground and buffed Spear to compete with it. Yes, you can simplify it to fishing for Balance but what made it interesting was trying to line up good Royal Roads and Spreads.

And yeah I personally dislike the amount of oGCD spam you have to do in the first few GCDs to get a fast and strong Divination, I'll honestly take RNG fishing for spread balance over that.

Yes, balance was the only one that you wanted to play to play optimally. No, getting rid of the system entirely was not the way to go about changing it. It would have been far better to remove balance than to make every card into balance, which is basically what they did. There were two ways to fix it and they chose the way that removed the classes identity.

Right now at Limsa Lominsa square in Ultros there's a group putting on a legit concert with sound effects. I've been sitting here for 15 minutes listening to it.

Without knowing how it worked, I think a better fix would be to make it so you can't fish for stuff. You get the card you get and you have to decide the best way to use it.

The issue with this, presumably, is that if you get bad RNG you'll just get lower damage contribution overall 'cause you didn't get the best card. But meh, the variance should even out...

The variance doesn't even out, that was the problem. At the very end Balance was still optimal but Spear was worth using as an alternative, and Arrow if you had a BLM (and maybe monk? not sure), but only as in, using those isn't a huge loss and can make up for some bad RNG. But like...this was fine? It was close enough to even. It was changed more because the gameplay felt bad.

But this was the fixed version. Originally the Balance was so strong because it was the ONLY DPS option (except for Arrow on BLM) and was also twice or thrice as powerful. The above was after multiple rounds of nerfs and buffs to the other cards.

Do Scrutiny + Meticulous twice, then whatever action would bring it to 1000 (ideally another Meticulous), then collect. Every time.

Got a message that I maxed out on these Allegan Poetics things, so I went and bought this Augmented Ironworks set and it's rad as all hell.

Didn't buy the belt because sounds like those are kicking the bucket anyways, lol.

Yeah and you're going to be rolling in poetics from doing level 50 stuff. Every time there's a new player in the duty (you), it gives everyone bonus tomestones.

For reference, that augmented ironworks set you're buying now at level 50 is good enough to last you until level 60. You won't have to worry too much about gear throughout all of Heavensward and can just take whatever upgrades fall into your lap. Then at 60 you can use poetics to buy gear that will last until 70, etc. So poetics are going to be your best friend for a while, try to not let them go to waste.
