NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

The writing was absolutely on the wall - they've spent the past year or so posting self-deprecating #savethevideostore memes - but damn, this still sucks. Video rental stores have a magic that streaming services just flat-out don't.

Nothing beat going into the video store, having a bag of fresh popcorn and then browsing the game isles. Best movie experiences I've had.

Yeah that's usually one thing brick and mortar stores have that streaming/online stores won't be able to replicate. Though streaming/online stores do about most everything else better than brick and mortar stores.

A lot of small towns in the Midwest never had a Blockbuster. Family Video was like the discount version concentrated in those areas. We had one for years and years. I heard recently they paired up with a discount pizza chain to fight back against streaming but obviously that didn't work.

I feel like it's something people feel nostalgic for but just isn't practical to do anymore. Like, someone feels nostalgic looking at 70s pants but no way they would wear it in the present day.

Video rental stores only really had a solid run of like 25-30ish years when you think about it. Pretty much a blip overall.

I had one down the road from me that finally closed last year.

I have good memories but I also don't miss having to go out for a drive to borrow a 2 hour movie for a night lol. Also have no desire to rent games anymore either. I buy games for the cost I used to rent them.

Digital killed the video store

Yeah for sure. I mean yeah I have good memories of browsing shelves, seeing the new releases, being excited when something I wanted to watch is finally available to rent and judging box arts but even disregarding digital the internet alone killed a lot of that experience. There's no real sense of mystery because I can immediately check the critic score and release date of any game or movie I am interested in.

Our favorite date night restaurant

The place we had our first date at

Family Video

Exactly, that excitement after school on Friday nights and wanting to get there ASAP hoping there was still some new release movies/games left

Still got the last Blockbuster in Oregon still chugging along. Which reminds me, watched a good documentary a few weeks back called the Last Blockbuster, all about the final location in Oregon, pretty good/nostalgic

I don't think you can recreate what made rental stores special again in the future. They're very much a product of their time.

Even arcades have a better chance to make a comeback lol

Some guy here opened an "arcade" that's basically a big LAN center with a shitload of Xboxes and PS4s and a VR area. There's a few classic arcade games and pinball machines too. Went there for a nephew's birthday party once and it was pretty cool.

Sad. They were always better than Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. I had one about a mile from me that closed a couple months ago that I'd go to almost every week just to browse around. Had a few more within a 20 mile radius. Guess I'll have to stop in one last time to see what I can snag.

I understand how the people working there feel. I used to work at Hollywood Video. Worked there for nearly 8 years when the company went out of business in 2010. Interestingly enough, some months after the Hollywood Video I worked at closed, it was replaced by a Family Video. But that particular store closed about two or three years ago.

Kinda sucks knowing my kids won't ever get to experience things like browsing a movie rental store or going to a midnight launch for a new game.

Streaming and digital downloads are obviously way more easy and convenient but it's so damn boring compared to how it used to be.
