So, this is for fans of the Noble Nine. From known leaker, Vergeben, before Hero was released.



To slightly sum up this post, he heard seven names from Square Enix in regards to a potential Fighter coming to Smash. Erdrick, Luminary, Slime, Sephiroth, Crono, Geno, and Sora.

Of those names, he heard specifically heard that Sephiroth, a Dragon Quest character, and Crono were considered the most likely to be the character. Geno was considered a joke, while it was said that Sora was not in. The thing is, we now have both Hero (Erdrick and Luminary, with Slime being part of their taunts) and Sephiroth. So, what this means to me, is that either Crono will be a Mii Costume or a Fighter down the line.

This is heavy speculation, but if Fighters Pass Vol. 3 ends up being a thing, then I think chances are good that Crono will be a Fighter in it. Then the Noble Nine will be complete.

I think any MK character is really unlikely for the same reason I never really believed in Doom Guy. You cant represent these characters as accurately and detailed as these third characters tend to be without making them super violent

If you put Scorpion in the game, but you cant give him a fatality or X-Ray attack, then whats the point?

I know Ryu H has a lot of reasons to be included. My issue is, I just have a hard time picturing it. People are already complaining about anime swordsmen and most of the newer ones at least have solid gameplay mechanics associated with them. Is there anything like that they could do with Ryu H?

Sephiroth was largely well received. I think complaints about anime swordsman are really more a complaint about Fire Emblem and people wouldn't be happy about new FE characters even if they didn't use a sword.

They toned them down in MK vs. DC, so it's not really that impossible. Unlikely, sure.

Mortal Kombat is never getting in sadly. A lot of the games are banned in other countries, which includes MK11 being banned in Japan.

sure, and theyve ported a few MK characters to Injustice, but I dont think the way they toned the characters down for MK vs DC was very well received and theyd have to go even toned downer for Smash. I dont think theres a version of Scorpion that is appropriate for Smash Bros. while also being up to the quality of depiction weve come to expect from these DLC characters. It would just feel lame.

I think Sub-Zero is like the only MK character that you wouldn't have to tone down much. Turning someone to ice and then smashing them is PG-rated violence, especially if they come back fine immediately after.

MK characters won't get in because they're too western. Literally every DLC character has been an eastern character except for Banjo and Steve. The former is honorary Nintendo and Minecraft is super popular in Japan. I don't think western characters are being intentionally excluded, but if you're Sakurai and you have the option to pick Sub-Zero or a character you're more familiar with and who is more popular in your home country, the choice is clear.

This is why characters like Doomguy always seemed like a pipe dream. No idea how that one took off. The only realistic western possibility right now is Crash but I think that's also stretching it.

Yeah I've never really gotten why people were going with Master Chief for the same reasons. I can't imagine that pick plays well in Japan at all. They have other options.

Actually how popular is Skyrim in Japan? Dragonborn could maybe work as a surprise western pick. Japan likes the medieval fantasy aesthetic overall.

But I would put money on Sans being upgraded before Chief, Doomguy, Sub-Zero, Drake, Lara ect. getting in.

Also I would bet on any of those getting in before Nintendo working out a deal for Sora with Disney

A lot of the Smash inclusions happen because gaming companies gave this inherent deep-seated respect for Nintendo. Being in Smash is prestigious. Disney won't give a fuck. They'll ask for way more than Nintendo is willing to give.

I dont think Sora is totally out of the question. I dont think theres much reason for Disney to be really stingy with him.
The bigger thing in the way may be that no one at Disney cares enough to actively pursue the deal.

Im trying to think of what other crossovers Disney characters have done lately other than Fortnite, but I keep thinking of stuff that predates the characters being owned by Disney like Yoda in Soul Calibur.

Greninja is in the game and Sheik is kind of a ninja, but I think theres enough room for Ryu to be distinct from them. Neither uses a sword, so thats a big difference right off the bat.

Its not banned. This is incorrect info that keeps being spread. X was released in Japan. 11 wasnt localized, but you can still buy it on Steam.

These characters are overwhelmingly male (or have an option where you can pick a gender) and/or Japanese.

Seems likely that the last three characters will be a similar theme. So for the final three characters, I feel like famous JRPG characters (Crono, Magus, Frog, Squall, Auron, Balthier, Lightning, Noctis, Tidus, Sora, Lloyd Irving, Kratos, Yuri Lowell, etc etc etc) are not at all out of left field. Sora probably would have already been in if Disney wasn't such a pain to work with, and I wouldn't have my hopes up for him.

Beyond that, likely characters would be Ryu Hayabusa, Dante, something from Soul Calibur, a random fighting game character from out of left field, or who really knows. That's the whole fun.

• Can't see us getting another Square character after Seph. If by some miraculous chance we did, Crono, Terra, Squall, Tidus, Lightning, Noctis, Sora, 2B, and Lara Croft would have a shot. No chance of a supporting character like Magus, Balthier, etc. getting in before their game's lead.

• Lloyd or Yuri (or possibly Velvet, although she clashes with your Japanese male theory) have a decent shot. That said, Nightmare from Soul Calibur might be the more likely Namco rep.

• Ryu Hayabusa seems more likely than any other character at this point. Nintendo and Tecmo have partnered before, so why not. If this were Vegas, he'd probably have like +200 odds of getting in, whereas anyone else would have +500 or more.

• Dante seems like the most obvious Capcom choice at this point, but don't rule out Phoenix Wright.

• Tails, Eggman, and Shadow are obvious choices if Sega gets another rep.

• Crash wouldn't surprise me.

• And don't forget 1st party Nintendo characters. Rex, 8th Gen Pokemon, etc.

I think Halo is (was?) pretty popular in Japan, actually. Granted it was only on unpopular systems, but I think it sold well relative to other Xbox games.

I might be wrong about this but I think it took off because id Software straight up mentioned on Twitter that they were in talks with Nintendo about it. Or in talks about something, at least.

Surprise Nero instead of Dante would be awesome. Would love to see Red Queen's Exceed mechanic interpreted in Smash.

I think he's fairly likely simply because who else is left? Not at all a guarantee though.

I think for the final three of Vol. 2 and perhaps the Fighters of Vol. 3 (if that's a thing), will come down between these characters: Chun-Li, Chosen Undead, Crash Bandicoot, Crono, Dante, Doomguy, Doctor Eggman, Gordon Freeman, Lara Croft, Master Chief, Monster Hunter, Phoenix Wright, Rayman, and Ryu Hayabusa. This is, of course, not including any potential Nintendo characters, which I'm sure we'll at least get one more if Vol. 3 is a thing. Sadly, I think Geno and Sora are out of the running.

I'd say Master Chief is a huge possibility if Halo is even somewhat niche in Japan.

If you really want it to be a "celebration of gaming" the last three slots should be Lara, Crash, and Master Chief, but I doubt we get any of these.
