Employees at Penguin Random House Canada reportedly cried over the publisher's decision to publish Jordan Peterson's new book during a town hall meeting. Peterson, a Canadian clinical psychologist self-styled as the "professor against political correctness," announced his new book Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life will be released in March 2021 in a YouTube video on Monday. Vice reported that the news sparked an outcry at Canada's biggest book publisher, with some staffers confronting management in a bid to cancel the book's release. Dozens more filed anonymous complaints about the book, the report said. Four Penguin Random House Canada employees told Vice that the company was secretive about Peterson's book and it didn't appear in an internal database that usually includes all upcoming releases. They said that at the internal town hall on Monday, publishing executives defended the decision to publish Peterson, while employees aired their grievances.

"He is an icon of hate speech and transphobia and the fact that he's an icon of white supremacy, regardless of the content of his book, I'm not proud to work for a company that publishes him," one employee, who is a member of the LGBTQ community, told Vice. Another said "people were crying in the meeting about how Jordan Peterson has affected their lives." One staffer said Peterson had "radicalized" their father, while another said publishing his new book "will negatively affect their non-binary friend." Peterson is known for his divisive views on political and cultural issues, after rising to prominence over his refusal to use gender-neutral pronouns in 2016. His book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos sold more than five million copies worldwide, according to Penguin Random House. In a statement to Vice, Penguin Random House Canada said it was "committed to publishing a range of voices and viewpoints." Peterson's daughter Mikhaila Peterson tweeted the article, adding that the "crying adults" should be identified and fired. Conservative pundit Candace Owens also called for the employees to be terminated. "I have never understood business owners being 'confronted' by employees making demands," she tweeted. "As a business-owner, I simply cannot relate. That's a fast-track to unemployment for those of us that have a spine. I didn't build my businesses for entitled brats to tell me how to run it."

I don't doubt that this happened but Jordan Peterson is basically the vanillaist ice cream. If someone quits over this then you are better off cutting them loose because if they sue you they will lose super hard because what they see as offensive is generally seen as mild in any of the countries they work in and Jordan Peterson sells stuff in.

I get that people can dump on Peterson, but come on. There is nothing radicalizing about his rhetoric. It's pretty much milquetoast, moderately conservative stuff.

Calling him an icon of white supremacy is pretty ridiculous.

This should not be news.

Fire them or ask for their resignations. They will have free time to apply at businesses that do not support Jordan Peterson. Its a win-win for both parties.

I completely understand the transphobia accusations and I think there are sexist aspects in his work too. A lot of those things aren't supported by evidence, he often likes to jump from claims that have evidence to tangential conclusions that would never fly in actual peer reviewed work but YouTube and popular science publications won't be affected.

That said the white supremacy stuff feels like buzzwords. I hate when people just generically attack someone without thinking about whether or not the attack has merit.

This is such a weird response. Nobody has claimed otherwise, but for some reason "free speech motherfucker" is such a common response to people being criticized for things they say.

Jordan Peterson likes "exploring ideas". Problem is a lot of those ideas are ridiculous for a number of reasons but he rarely bothers pointing that out until he's being confronted about it.

Then, some people will agree with those ideas and will repeat them. And, really, people who like to listen to Jordan Peterson can't shut up about him. Usually, it doesn't go any farther than that. In some cases however, they'll start digger deeper and fall further and further down the alt-right, incel or whatever else hole.

He's similar to Rogan in a way, an "introduction to potentially terrible ideas". Obviously, they both differ very much in how they do it as Peterson is very well-read about what he's talking about while Rogan is an ignorant buffoon who will invite anyone and let them say anything.

Like I said, its pretty moderate conservative stuff. Being mildly transphobic or sexist doesn't really equate to being alt-right, white supremacist, etc.

To be fair, checking other articles about this, some of the employees were apparently literally in tears during their objection. That is, they aren't using "crying employees" as a hyperbolic dig for employees complaining, but that some of them were actually crying.

To be fair, he was responding to a post that was saying the book shouldn't be published at all, rather than a criticism.
