and what's offensive about the term?
is it that indians didn't actually sit that way?
is it that we're referring to them as indians instead of native americans?
is it that pigeonholing them into one sitting style isn't fair?

criss-cross applesauce is just some rhyming nonsense, i could call it crosslegged eggshed and that would rhyme too

I grew up right next to a native reservation, they have never had an issue calling it sitting Indian style so it must have been white people. They do understandably however hate the term Indian giver

well that term is used purely as an insult

"indian style" is simply describing a way of sitting

My only beef with the phrase is theres like no freaking way that in thousands of years nobody in europe thought to sit that way. How is such a natural position to sit in something that was discovered in the new world? It just seems ridiculous. Idk it just seems implausible

Its not, which is why its stupid.

Its seen as offensive because people incorrectly assume its referring to Native Americans.

Its actually based on the yoga position Lotus.

The fact that it's automatically assumed to be Native Americans by most people easily defaults it to them.

Cowboys and Indians, Indian Burn, Indian Style, Indian Giving; I mean, how many nicknames do Americans have with "Indian" in it that actually are referring to people from India?

Because that's what it originated from
the stereotype that Indians have the ability to charm snakes and as part of the 'magic' they sat like that

Yeah, here we call it "tailor's sit" if I were to translate it literally. So my guess is that tailors and seamstress in past times would sit like that as well

Because applying an entire culture to one way of sitting is dense. Cross-legged is a better term. Quit crying that the term you grew up with is outmoded.

What I don't get is adding the extra "applesauce". I get that it's cutesy, but "Indian style" was not cutesy to begin with. There's no need to add an extra word.

For kids. Making it fun and rhyming betters the chance of it catching and sticking so kids actually do it when you ask / tell them to.
