At least three people have been killed - two of them beheaded - and several others stabbed in a terrorist knife attack at a cathedral in Nice.

The attack began around 9am just as Mass at the Notre Dame basilica - the largest Roman Catholic church in Nice - was getting underway.

Police quickly swarmed the area, where they shot and arrested the attacker, who has been taken to hospital. A police source said it appears he was acting alone.

The city's mayor, Christian Estrosi, tweeted: 'I confirm that everything suggests a terrorist attack in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Nice.

'Nice has paid too heavy a price in the same way as our country in recent years. I call for unity among the people of this city.

Naming a teacher who was beheaded in another attack in Paris, he added: 'Thirteen days after Samuel Paty, our country can no longer be satisfied with the laws of peace to annihilate Islamo-fascism.'

I honestly find it absolutely sickening the levels of which people will go to defend Islam.

Usually they deflect to how Christianity is just as bad and I definitely agree that it deserves a ton of criticism, but it isn't even close.

Islam has so many weird rules that are just very much at odds with the western world. It bothers me how people defend how they treat women and gay people then attack christians for doing much less bad, but still terrible versions of that.

I would say there is a big difference between saying all muslims are bad compared to saying many parts of islam are super worthy of criticism.

Like as someone who grew up catholic and is now atheist, I will absolutely trash most parts of catholicism. To remain logically consistent I'd have to not think very well of islam either.

I've met way too many hard left people who will attack Christianity and defend Islam. It really irks me. They see it as progressive to support the islamic faith when it is clearly not a progressive religion. Like how many religions could really be considered progressive?

from what i remember from my time in school, it's not bad in christianity to depict jesus so it's not an issue. but in islam, it's a belief that you don't and that's why it can be offensive

so you can't really compare in that way

The whole idea that you can't ever depict Mohammed is super primitive and the whole rest of the world shouldn't cater to that belief out of fear of terrorism.

If there weren't big acts of violence committed over it then Id have some sympathy, but it is murdering people over a drawing do I'm going to call it absolute garbage.

This stuff seems to mostly happen in France and I wish people would acknowledge the history of France and why they have such issues with public displays of religion. They've had a lot of issues with catholicism in the past and banned religious symbols from a lot of public places. They try to extend that to Islam in this modern age and face backlash from it. France takes in tons of Muslims, but they don't have the whole melting pot ideology going for their country like we do.

I think it has to do with the people most likely to call islam a religion of violence are the proud boy types and hard left leaning people see muslim people as victims of proud boy types.
