My initial reaction is that I'm not crazy about it. The sprite work was really Disgaea's entire artistic signature, so this is going to feel "off" as mnk put it no matter how good it is. Will probably still be interesting to see them do something different, at least.

I mean in the general case sure that makes sense but is 3D really cheaper when they've got the foundation for spritework firmly entrenched in their series and can reuse a lot of stuff.

Kinda salty that there's a playable? animal character, or at least an important one... except it's a Pug and it's also a zombie.

I'm pretty excited for it, I've been playing the new disgaea games with HD sprites and it really just doesn't feel as polished in 2020. Janky 3-D is this decade's blurry 2-d sprites so it fits the series well

Ive never finished a Disgaea game. I get as far as unlocking the Item World, then Im off to the races. Ive got no great attachment to the sprites.

This is where your ability to progress speeds up like crazy though.

Oh also, it means we might get a free rotating camera in item world, which would basically be a game changer

A Disgaea 5 Complete Game Trial will begin on September 23, 2020.

For those new to the concept, heres a how Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial works. As long as someone is an active member, they can go to the eShop and download a full digital copy of the game to play for the duration of the trial period. Your save date is the same as a normal version, so you could then buy the game after the phase ends and continue where you left off if you didnt finish.

Seems probably ok to me. I do love sprites, but as long as the gameplay is solid then it's not gonna matter too much to me if the game sports a 3D look.

It continues to evolve the various systems at your disposal and plays pretty nicely mechanically. I've not gotten deep into the postgame with it, but it was hailed as having the best gameplay until Disgaea 1 got remade recently which apparently usurped that from D5.

The story is nothing amazing, playing out like a sub-par anime, but aside from that it is a solid disgaea experience.
