which game are you trying to play? Some are more exciting than others. Like Phantom Doctrine felt like a grind after a while for me.

Ohh you got him! lol turn based games dont take much attention. You can take your turn and literally doze off until the other person attacks.

I feel like I've lost interest in turn-based JRPGs, but turn-based WRPGs have been pretty fun this gen, for me.

they often better utilize distance, environment, barriers/cover, etc., IMO, so it feels like there's more going on than scrolling through a menu and choosing the best option.

and the XCOM games expand on that kinda stuff even further, from my experience.

It's fun, just got to find a game that does it well like Final Fantasy 10. Battles in that game were like a chess match considering how often you had to plan ahead.

Turn based strategy games like XCOM and Civilization can be a lot of fun, but RPGs tend to get very tedious.

well some people were born with good taste and like turn based games
others were born with shit taste and im very sorry but there is no cure
you will never not have shit taste
but on the plus side its not hereditary so you wont pass it down to your children
they can live successful non shit taste having lives

If you are getting xcom on steam, watch for steam sales. The games are stupid expensive. Xcom 2 collection was 100 bucks, and the xcom 1 bundle was 60 bucks.

I really liked Phantom Doctrine, but yeah, it went on too long.

Anyways, to the topic: I like thinking about my actions and watching a plan come together. There are real time games that afford that, but turn-based strategy or combat allows for that sort of thoughtfulness more often.

It really depends on the game and your personal preference. I love turn based combat games, but I find Dragon Quest games boring as hell.

Anyways, to the topic: I like thinking about my actions and watching a plan come together. There are real time games that afford that, but turn-based strategy or combat allows for that sort of thoughtfulness more often.

I liked the setting, setting the cases up on the board, coming up with new identities for the agents.

But I definitely made it harder on myself by sucking and therefore relying on the slower "sneak around and knock everyone out" tactic for a lot of missions. I should try to finish that though.

Yeah, it feels like people forget that chess, checkers, and other board games are all turn based too. If you can't sit down and play Scrabble or Battleship or whatever, that's a problem with you, not turn based games.

Yes, it is relevent since Chess is literally turn based. So are things like Checkers, Monopoly, Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect 4, and card games

A bunch of reasons.

For one, sometimes i just want to chill and get immersed in the world and story and characters, and not worry too much about the active gameplay elements. I know the response to this is probably something like "read a book", but games offer a level of story engagement unique to the medium. That's what I mostly like.

In terms of actual gameplay, there are a couple of elements I like about turn based games when done well.

-Strategy is rarely at Xanatos level gambits, but there is something satisfying about organizing a course of action. I actually really like Final Fantasy X for this, as each character has a defined role, and each enemy encounter is designed with those roles in mind. So it's a quick, rapid burst of "okay, there's a bat, an elemental, and an iron giant. I'll have wakka attack the bat, lulu blast the elemental, then have Auron use power break on the iron giant so i can focus all the teams attention on it next round."

-In some RPGs, it's the customization aspect that's fun. Class based systems are rarely designed to require a specific "meta", but it can feel rewarding if you plan something out. And even if you just overpower through the trash mobs by grinding, it's still "your" party that you built and customized. And depending on the game, there's satisfaction in figuring out just how badly you can break the game with combinations the developers either didn't foresee or didn't care enough about to restrict.

-long dungeons and stretches of exploration can require you to prepare and budget your resources, so that HP, MP, and your healing items become precious commodities. Pokemon Red/Blue are a good example of this, as it's easy to get stuck halfway through a cave with a barely alive party, where you need to really be picky on who you use your last Potion on. Surviving these areas and getting to the light at the end of the tunnel is really fun.

Also back in the day, it was the only way to get your money's worth in terms of hours of content in the days of ps1. Or constant multi-player but that requires friends and travel to each others houses.

It's obvious why it took off honestly.

But these days I can't stand them honestly. Dragon quest 11 in particular really grinds my gears.

iron giants are for yuna to fight
each area has 1 giant enemy with more HP than anything else that are designed to be fought with an aeon

I woke the next day to find him dead on the floor.

...My Xbox, I am sure still has the same game save from that night.

Well step one I was born in the 80s so games were either platformers/2d run and gun shooters that lasted 45 minutes if you didnt die, except you would or were turn based.
