persona 4 golden with the true ending and only missing like 3 maxed confidants. 8/10

the first persona game i beat and i kinda realized it's not my thing even though i've given them serious playtime.. had like 66 hours of P5 before i quit out of boredom.

only reason i managed to get through P4 is because you can go through it much faster but the artificial padding just kills me.

Grand Theft Auto - Vice city. Definitely flawed and clumsy in places with some clunky controls, the speedboat in particular being awful. That said it was still more fun than frustrating and never got dull like other gta games seem to do for me. Best parts where when I had to chace someone down on a vehicle and kill them. Also the soundtrack is killer. I give it a personal rating of 9/10

Assassin's Creed Origins - 8.25/10

The new RPG leveling up and combat systems are very welcome changes. Bayek is a great and very likeable character. Game feels like it's 15% story 10% collectibles 75% fetch quests. These side missions really make the game feel like a chore and only a handful of them feel memorable and like they add to the story. Main villain is a BIG "Literally who?" moment. Story jumps around a lot, I feel like I don't really become invested in any of the characters, and it still leaves you questioning a lot. Aya missions feel forced and are terrible considering how comfortable you feel with Bayek then having to level down to this nobody. Collecting the papyri was fun. Amazing setting. I replayed this twice already because the story leaves me feeling like there was a lot I missed out on, really it's just the bad storytelling leaving a lot unfulfilled.

Fable Anniversary

Uh...

7/10

Combat was okay if easily exploited

Graphics were pretty good for being an old remaster of an old game

Didnt have any glaring audio issues

Story is neh

But overall I did enjoy playing it

This topic is making me realize the last game I beat was in April, which was Tales of Berseria, which I would give a 7/10. It was fun and one of the better Tales games in the series, with a decent revenge story. Story overall was really good except a few things that were too obvious.

Really just disappointed in myself that I keep picking up and putting down games

Never really bothered me to be honest. The physics are wonky in certain ways, hence why it's not a 10/10, but the devs have released updates to improve them. Now if only they would release their shotgun update...

Indivisible - 7/10
Decent fun in the metroidvania/platforming parts, combat felt a bit unrewarding and button mashy and the storyline didn't click with me during the mid portions of the game. Do enjoy that art style tho.

Steamworld Dig 2 - Solid 7 out of 10. A metroidvania with a little bit of Dig Dug mixed in. Digging for money to collect upgrades gives the game a nice gameplay loop instead of the standard focus on killing enemies in most metroidvanias. Cool visual style, great music, and fun mechanics; the game just needed a bit more content and bosses.

Hollow Knight - 9.5/10

The first game I've played in several years, Hollow Knight feels like a spiritual successor to the early Paper Mario games. The world of Hallownest is large and beautiful and a pleasure to explore. The Charm system -- Hollow Knight's answer to the Badge system of "Thousand-Year Door" -- allow for a surprising amount of customization.

As a platformer, Hollow Knight strikes a perfect balance between frustrating and engaging, due in no small part to the subdued aesthetic beauty of the world. The combat is fast-paced, brutal, and exhilirating, and each boss fight presents a unique challenge and reward for completion (my personal favourite, for both the fight itself and the reward afterwards, being the Mantis Lords).

The story deals with heavily with themes of guilt, loss, history, and responsibility, and it is through these themes that I find my qualm with the morals: early on, the player receives a journal from a character called "The Hunter", which contains encyclopedia-like entries on the various beasts you encounter across Hallownest, filling in as you "defeat" more of them. It quickly becomes clear from reading these entries that the Hunter is, as the name suggests, some sort of apex predator who delights in killing these beasts indiscriminately. The entries draw a comparison between the Hunter's words and the Player's behavior -- in order to receive the entries in the first place, you must behave in a manner similar to the Hunter. It feels like a critique of the player, without offering any alternative for reaching full completion.

Forcing players to consider their actions in a broader context is by no means a bad thing, but a way of completing the journal without behaving like a blood-crazed killer would have been nice.

This is, overall, a fairly minor qualm with a game that does many things extremely well: even the most frustrating platforming section was still a tremendously enjoyable experience, and I anxiously await the sequel.

Replayed Forza Horizon recently - probably an 8.5/10?

Its a good racing game with very solid driving physics. I enjoy the open world presentation of it. The single player feels like mostly a trial run for the multiplayer so I suppose the game is a little limited now that its been out for 8 years and there probably isnt much of a community left. The cars available are great. One complaint I have is that there are really only a small handful of R2 and R1 class races which kinda defeat the purpose of having those cars outside of multiplayer.

God of War

Fuckin' beautiful game, combat is satisfying, Kratos is surprisingly entertaining as this incorrigible stick in the mud with no sense of humor while also trying to be a good father, one of the few open world games where I actually wanted to 100% complete it. Would've been a literally perfect game if the ending didn't give me blue balls, 9/10.

Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice : 8.5/10

I really enjoyed this game, even though its short, the enemies are kind of samey, and they sometimes make finding runes really obtuse. Its a pretty well-written game, starring a character who hears voices(which are fully voiced: you hear them too, of course! The game even makes use of them to help you in combat!)
Combat feels great: you end up outnumbered in regular encounters really quickly, and all the bosses especially Garm are well-constructed. The lack of health bars actually keeps things really tense: basically you only die if youre hit while youre prone, which makes positioning yourself well vital. Dying only increases Senuas darkness.
Plus, the final boss fight is incredibly epic and emotional and the game ends very strongly. Overall, its a great experience.

Edit: I too am guilty of serially abandoning games. I beat this in February.

The Last of Us Part 2 - 7/10

Presentation & attention to detail were incredible and I mostly enjoyed the story. In terms of actual gameplay and design, though, I thought TLOU2 was lacking. It's a stealth game where the stealth kind of sucks, and the campaign drags on way too long and had too much filler. Overall a pretty cool game though, definitely worth playing just for the spectacle

Sonic Forces. 2/10

just a big pile of dog shit. The 3D levels are as bad as theyve ever been in a Sonic game. Theyre trivial and play themselves. You can just hold the boost button in midair and literally skip entire halves of levels. Theres basically only 1 enemy they paste over and over again. The 2D classic-style levels are the highlight, but theyre not close to as good as levels from Sonic Genesis games. The art and backgrounds are cluttered and uninspired. The story is so awful. Cant decide if it wants to be a grimdark war story or a preschool friendship story. The story would almost be so bad its funny if the dialogue wasnt so boring.

Pirates of Dark Water (Sega Genesis) -- 7/10

The backgrounds are beautiful, the music is great, the story is good. The gameplay is standard Sega Genesis side scrolling action. One button to jump, one to slash, one to throw your special weapon. Gameplay shines here and there, but there's not a whole lot to talk about in terms of innovation. It's sort of like Disney's Aladdin, but with stiffer controls.

Curiously, the game was released in 1994 while the cartoon it was based upon was cancelled in 1992. I get the feeling that the game was near completion when the cartoon was canceled, but that it was finished by another publisher later on. There are two publishers credited to the game and the later levels are considerably shorter than their predecessors.

A lot of the game's charm comes from character cameos, monsters pulled from specific episodes, and scenarios drawn from the show, so one's enjoyment may vary depending on how familiar they are with the source material.
