I was reading a guide when playing FFVII and it had notes for those attempting a "perfect" save, as in 99 of every repeatable item and as many as possible of everything else, things that are missable if you level up too much and things aren't worth the grind for one of them. It's definitely nuts. What scares me about this one is that if he somehow dies, he has to start over.

No. You can load if you die not continue. He is 4 years into it and not even close to finishing.

I always thought it was weird to consider a perfect file one that requires you to abuse a glitch.

Is it any worse than FFIX perfect saves? Which, aside all the hidden bullcrap you have to put up with, having to get enough items to synthesize into other items, having to deal with the fact that how much your stats increase on level up depends on what equipment you have on them at the time, having to collect all the cards AND level them up... in addition to all of that, you had to speedrun it in order to get Excalibur II...

It's for people who are planning on only doing it with game I imagine.

I remember someone doing it for Chrono Trigger using the new game plus feature to get missable stuff to 99

It's not a glitch. It is how the game is designed. It gives you the option when you die

The hard part is their is rare spawns which are difficult and he was to max all the kills on them in the log to 9999.

who decided that a perfect save file should have 99 of every item ? That sounds wasteful. A perfect save file would have zero items because they were all used responsibly.

He isn't doing a "perfect save file" as you would consider it. He is doing what he considers an ultimately complete playthrough and self-imposed what it consists of

it's a "safe" activity they can invest in, something they feel comfortable doing and which they will eventually succeed if given enough time. setting such lofty completionist goals all but ensures that these activities will occupy their time and keep them distracted from the other aspects of their lives where they are incomplete, afraid to take risks, and are unsure if they could succeed.

Years ago I wanted to make every Pokemon "Battle Ready" in Pokemon Emerald
Well, they didn't have perfect IVs or anything because it was hella hard to do back then, but they were EV trained with the right nature and leveled up to level 100
Surely they became obsolete with Gen IV and the Physical/Special split and much better movepools (I mean, most Pokemon had Toxic because their movepool sucked..) but still!
Anyway it wasn't as bad as it sounds because it was played on a emulator with turbo (no cheats) but it was still pretty bad...took weeks

And even more years ago I played Fifa 99 and wanted to "beat every team with every team"
I started with Aalst, Belgium (the first team in alphabet order in the game) and after hours and hours of playing I realized how impossible the task is and gave up

perhaps it's because i watch so many speedrunners (i.e. people who do the same thing in a game over and over and over again) but i think this is a pretty dumb post tbqh. people don't have to care about or be impressed by a goal for it to be worthwhile.

thats not the same thing. people care about and are impressed by speedruns. they take skill. I could dedicate all my time to being the SMW world record holder and I still might never achieve it.

the guy this topic is about is just running up a number. anyone who can beat one Heartless or acquire one hi-potion could do it 9999 times too, hes not displaying any actual talent. I mean you were watching speedrunners, would you ever want to watch a guy just mindlessly farm Gil for hours?

it just bums me out to think of someone spending hundreds (thousands?) of hours on that. I imagine if he ever finishes it will just leave him feeling kind of empty rather than fulfilled... but also its not like Im using all my time super well either so I shouldnt throw stones from inside my glass house where Im playing SMRPG for the dozenth time.

I'd put speedrunners in the same category as people like this though. I saw a clip of a guy who failed after a six and a half hour speedrun because an attack missed in an RPG. And then there are the people who speedrun super luck based stuff like Mario Party or try to speedrun collecting every card in a YuGiOh game. Is it wrong to consider those people as wasting just as much time?

Oh don't get me wrong everyone should feel allowed to waste time in their lives just to unwind.

But at the same time I think if you make a long term goal it's important for your 'checkpoints' to have value. So even if you don't hit your goal you still had some memorable experiences along the way.

i think you're kind of overstating how important talent is in speedrunning, though.

arcus is an average gamer (at best) and he has the any% world record in ninja gaiden. he's also done over 47000 attempts in te game. oftentimes, you can get a world record by just grinding it out.

you think mindless farming isn't a part of speedrunning? like, 90% of the dragon warrior 1 any% no RNG manipulation run is hours of mindless grinding. speedrunning isn't just executing super impressive tricks.
