Full-time minimum wage workers cannot afford a two-bedroom rental anywhere in the U.S. and cannot afford a one-bedroom rental in 95% of U.S. counties, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalitions annual Out of Reach report. In fact, the average minimum wage worker in the U.S. would need to work almost 97 hours per week to afford a fair market rate two-bedroom and 79 hours per week to afford a one-bedroom, NLIHC calculates. Thats well over two full-time jobs just to be able to afford a two-bedroom rental.

Who did you murder for a mortgage that low?

Did you fuck the underwriters wife in front of him when he was doing the paperwork?

what matters is the price and being happy with what paying for renting or owning etc.
we pay 720$. old place was 1k we used to pay 750$ before the new landlord decided to jack up the rent.

though we had to be on a waiting list for 2-3 years to get affordable housing luckily we make enough to qualify.
only bad thing is the location but once we get past the pandemic we have the bus option so it wouldn't be as bad.

Somewhere in the realm of $120-180 for utilities, mostly because KC Water is a fucking scam.
Property tax is escrow'd - looks to be about $1200.

Flyover states are cheap, unless you want to be "downtown" for some reason.

One of my friends is moving from an apartment from Westport to downtown and I just don't get it. Why do that to yourself?

I'm also just selfishly sad because she was the last friend I had who lived in Westport. Now I don't have a place to crash if we go hard.

Those places don't have work. And if you are commuting long distance for your work, your costs are increasing with car maintenance and gasoline, not to mention generally just losing free time for a second job or mental health(most min wage workers need one because most min wage jobs are not full time).

Greedy landlords and real estate people. Housing shouldn't be a profit sector. Neither should health care. These two things are vital.

It should be a law that rent should cost 30% of a households income.

Honestly we should outlaw evictions entirely for the next year.

Only

  1. People who have committed violent crimes against others in the apartment or made themselves a serious nuisance with repeated or extreme offenses(dog violations such as late and excessive barking, no leash failure to control no cleaning poop, loud parties, smoking on the property, harassment, propping open the security door when not actively using it, damaging common areas through gross negligence or malice etc.)
  2. Have caused signigant damage out of malice or negelience
  3. Are making illegal or dangerous drugs/chemicals on the property and/or making other illegal and/or dangerous transactions on the property.
  4. Have especially on more then one occasion recently taken actions that flagrantly risk the safety of the property and residents.

Should cover most exceptions. There will need to be more to it but yeah.

In 2018 I rented a 650$ 1BR apartment in El Paso tx. Could have gone sub 600$ even if they had any studios available when I applied.

Actually, El Paso is stupid low cost in general and has everything you'd expect in a city. Idk why its slept on so hard.

It should straight up be illegal for a non citizen/resident to own land in a country they do not reside in most circumstances.

Just another consequence of the staggering wealth inequality in this nation.

The rich are running out of things to own and extract profits from so theyve slowly been moving onto residential properties. Private equity and corporations own more residences now than ever before.

Generally it's cheaper to live outside a city. That's what I did 7 years ago.

I've noticed though even small areas some people are charging a lot for rent now. I think they buy stuff with little down payment then charge so much for rent so it offsets their monthly payments of course. A 3 bedroom house is like $1500-1600 CAD a month here where I am to rent. My 4 bedroom house mortgage and property tax is like only $1200 a month I think. It's 1200 sqft I think and utilities aren't so bad. If I move slightly out of in town I don't even have to pay for water/sewage. I'm saving up money for a decent down payment on another house to rent out and eventually will rent mine out in a few years since it'll be mortgage free in like 1-2 years if things go as planned. I generally try to rent the place at $100-300 less than the going rate. My basement I rent at $1100 all inclusive and the main level (3 bedrooms) I could rent for $1600 or more a month. I'd probably when the time comes only charge $1200-1400 a month plus split the utilities between the basement 60/40. Basically the first house will be a straight gain if it's mortgage free. I'd slowly be making the money back I spent while the house goes up and up in value.

Cost of living is increasing and it's a shitty situation for many min wage workers. You basically need 2 people working full time min wage just go get by if you want something in the 2 bedroom or higher range. Unfortunately this is a reality and in the major cities things are getting a lot more costly especially if the average is close to a million just to own a house.

You realize that reliable public transportation doesn't really exist outside of a handful of major U.S. cities, right? You're the naive one. Try answering my question instead of constantly dancing around it for the purpose of shitting on poor people.

Maybe you should try talking to people outside of your little bubble; get a taste of the real world before you run your mouth.

Also, fun fact: my city has no reliable public transportation. A dirt cheap, one bedroom apartment in the bad part of town still costs over 50% of a full time minimum wage worker's monthly salary. That's assuming you can even get full time as a minimum wage worker.

Note the "for minimum wage" part of my post. I know plenty of people who have an hour commute for non-minimum wage jobs. A lot of my friends, after graduation, got jobs about an hour and half drive away. Even though this was a high-paying, cushy office job, they were getting crushed by the cost of gas, wear and tear on their car, and just the mental toll of being isolated in a car for three hours a day. Every last one of them moved closer because that commute was unsustainable.

I'm sure it doesn't take a genius to extrapolate that someone making $30/hr can't afford to live that far away also means that someone making less than a third of that can't make a third of the commute.
