Oh wow, that's a cool idea. If they had something Disney I'd have to grab it.

Really cool, but $120 is a bit much. Why are LEGO so expensive?!

That's cool but not enough characters to be worth the price. It would be better as a choose your own style kind of thing.

Brick-wise, it looks like the whole thing is just round studs in varying colours stuck on a black 48*48 sheet (it might actually be 16 12*12 plates) that then gets mounted in a frame. If you're up for making your own, you could pretty easily find yourself a sprite art generator to turn your desired picture into a 48*48 sprite (or whatever dimensions you want, really), then order the studs on their own in the colours you need, put it on a background sheet (cut to size if needed), and mount it in a dollar store frame. It'd be a bit of work to organize the whole thing, but quite doable and probably cheaper than $120.

I like this idea. I'm going to look into building my son a Mega Man one

If you're having trouble finding a sprite generator, look for something to generate custom pictures in Animal Crossing. Those will be 32*32, rather than 48*48, but I believe you can find generators that will do composite images that take up 64*64 (breaking the image into quarters and giving a pattern for each), and if it's specifically 48*48 you want, you can modify the full image by adding a white border around the lower right third (e.g. take a 300*300 picture and expand it to 400*400, leaving the extra space blank) and then just ignore that border in copying the template. Those will also let you force the picture into a specific colour palette, which you can base off of the colours of studs you have available.

That said, I'm basing that idea off of using such generators for the GC/DS Animal Crossing games and being given basically a paint-by-number printout. These days, I'm pretty sure it's more common to get codes that you input to have the game generate the design for you, which wouldn't work as well. Your mileage may vary.

I'm not artistic at all. I'd screw up.

What adjl is describing is very user/newcomer friendly. Think of it like connect-the-dots or paint-by-numbers... the sprite template will literally guide you where to place your Legos. All you'd need to do is match the colors.

I think I'd want something more complex than just characters though. Like entire scenes or something really cool like the Death Star.
