Do you support the removal of these public racist monuments and statues?

Dozens of people witnessed history this morning in Delaware outside the Old Sussex county Courthouse to see a work crew dismantle the state's last publicly displayed WHIPPING POST that was historically used to hold people there to be WHIPPED for committing crimes but also used mostly on BLACK AMERICANS who were subjected to the horrific whipping!!

It took workers an hour and a half to dig up the 8 foot concrete post as the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs says it will be placed in a Dover Storage unit with other historical artifacts including another whipping post that once stood near The Green in Dover

They plan to work with historians, educators and african american leaders to display the post in a museum setting where it can be properly contextualized and interpreted

Tim Slavin said "It is appropriate for an item like this to be preserved in the state's collections so that future generations may view it and attempt to understand the full context of its historical significance. It's quite another thing to allow a whipping post to remain in place along a busy public street, a cold, deadpan display that does not adequately account for the traumatic legacy it represents and that still reverberates among communities of colour in our state"

This comes after nearly 2 decades after Delaware outlawed state sanctioned public floggings outside jails and prisons as the sentence for whipping post for crimes range from petty theft to rape and would be lashed up to FORTY TIMES for a single offense with african americans being punished disproprotionately

One woman in her 90s remembers the whipping as a young girl in the 30's that has stayed in her memory all these years as she remembered standing in a crowd with her father and sister outside the Kent County Jail and watching a man stripped down to his waist and shackled to an 8 foot post, dubbed "Red Hannah" being whipped iwth a cat-9-tails: a multi whip equipped with nine rawhide lashes

She still remembered the eerie siilence that was piercedby the lashes as the warden would loudly count

People of all races were lashed but black people represented 60% of the lashes even though they made up less than 20% of the population

State officials were urged to remove the whipping post even before the death of George Floyd sparked international outrage and set off a push to remove Confederate monuments as Trump intends to fight back to keep them there

Do you support the removal of these whipping posts?.

Yes, but it should be preserved in a museum or somewhere because:

I also think leaving it there would be fine, as long as there was a plaque to go along with it, detailing how the post is there as a somber reminder of our dark past.

EDIT: Only skimmed duckbear's post at first, cause...duckbear. I guess this is being done

this is one of those things i have far less sympathy for

the explicit purpose was to dehumanize, humiliate, and torture. keeping it sends a not very good message to the oppressed

Yeaah.... I think this is pretty clear-cut; you shouldn't turn used torture implements into public monuments.

Well, it's a historical punishment implement that kinda underscore how much more humane criminal justice has become over the years. It's basically a very "never-again" kind of monument. Getting rid of it kinda white-washes history. Other than that, it's kind of an eye-sore and it doesn't even appear to have a plaque explaining its significance.

you can acknowledge an event without having it on brazenly proud display like this

if the people who were hurt by it the most want it gone and not memorialized, then it should be gone

Except nothing about it suggests a sense of "pride" and its removal helps to cover up a dark period in the history of criminal justice, one that'll be easily forgotten.

...the people actually hurt by it likely aren't alive today and the protestors probably aren't even old enough to be children of anybody who suffered by it. The last time that one was used was in 1952. You'd have to look around nursing homes to find somebody who was whipped at that post since they'd be in at least their 70s if not 80s by now (because they weren't whipping people *born* in 1952 there)

Why don't they donate it to the nearest BDSM group? I'm sure they could find a use for it.

Because it's impractical for indoors and outdoor BDSM has logistical issues, plus it still holds historical value. That and I'm not sure BDSM enthusiasts are big into the group theme and, even if they were, it'd clash with the usual decor.

If it really has the racial connotations the media is trying to claim, it's possible that the local chapter of the KKK (or other white supremacist group of choice) might want it just to troll people with it.
