Treatment will cost 3k if you have private insurance and 2k if you have Medicare.

They got $70m of taxpayer money to help develop this and get to sell it back to the taxpayers at the prices listed above and get to keep all profits. What a deal for them. God bless America

If you have insurance. Theres just the little issue of unemployment being sky high, and insurance is tied to insurance in the US in most cases.

Also, console exclusive games were a thing. Now theres country exclusive drugs.

Its depressing but Im almost at the point where I agree. So many people complain about their insurance, their copays, the system in general. But thats it. We just complain, but we cant even be bothered to call or email a representative.

I guess the thing to do would have been to fund multiple companies simultaneously so we could have quicker production and a competitive market.

I mean, you've see how fast Amiibos and NES Classics sell out. Price adjustment is how supply and demand meet equilibrium. It would be like Jingle All the Way with guns.

Common misconception that economics is all about money. It's about resources, of which money is only one. They can't sell more than they have, and they can only make so much at once.

The other thing to do would have been to put a condition on the funding, like they had to donate so much of the profit to some relevant NPO or something. Wouldn't address the pricing problem though.

Let's see
If you get Corona and don't die your lungs are fucked for life
It is possible to be infected with Corona again
We have no idea if this drug not only cures corona but also prevents it from re-infecting you
Is this a "For life" drug that people will constantly have to take to avoid corona? If not, its going to be when only a wealthy portion of the population can afford it

Insurance actually pays a small fraction of the list price, which is exactly why it's priced at $3000 to begin with.

They don't have to justify it. They can do what they want in the US because there is very little protection for consumers and even less oversight for the pharmaceutical companies when it comes to pricing.

Capitalism. Fucked up thing is the government gave them 70 million or something like that to produce this so they didn't even use their own money for this research into the drug as mentioned in OP.

Hes ok with that. Go ahead and drain his hard earned tax dollars for that. But dont you dare give the medication to a poor person who is just trying to not die. Thats socialism and the worst thing possible.

I agree the system as a whole needs some fixing but I saw some points in your post and other posts and wanted to address them (I'm not right or wrong either way but I'm interested in some rebuttals):

  • No one who actually needs the drug will die due to being unable to afford the drug. They will certainly get the drug regardless if they personally can pay for it or not but yes it is unfortunate they may have to foot a larger bill afterwards in some instances.
  • A lot of you are mentioning that Americans are all about profit and looking out only for themselves. Are you aware that a lot of the drugs we have today are because Americans pay so much for our prescriptions? Biotech/pharma companies make investments into attempting to develop these drugs, because they know the ones that are successful will make huge profits in the USA. They can't charge as much in other countries because those countries tend to have intermediary organizations to negotiate lower prices for their citizens, or the citizens of that country can't afford higher prices so it'll be sold for much lower. Basically, the US citizens wind up footing the bill for these drugs so those in less wealthy countries can get the drugs they need.

So for the point I addressed in my 2nd bullet point, are you okay with lower prescription costs but allowing those in developing nations to not receive the drugs they need for cheaper prices? Sure, the "rich corporations" are selfish to an extent of course, but are we not also selfish ourselves for wanting cheaper prescription drugs for Americans if the result is less drug development and higher costs for a lot developing nations?

Sucks we'll have to pay a finger or two but as usual it's a huge win for the rest of the world now that Americas spent what was necessary for the R&D.

Now the rest of the world can simply just copy it, profit, and then continue shitting on how bad our healthcare system is.
