Spending gems on Aggro Up/Aggro Down doesn't feel too good though and Dunban/Riki really struggle with drawing aggro in my opinion. I mean Reyn's whole kit is built around drawing aggro and it feels like that's not even functioning properly half of the time!

At this point my main team is Shulk/Fiora/Sharla. Shulk and buddy do a lot of damage and at least one will get to attack from the back if the other one has aggro.

Dunban or Reyn could fit into the middle slot too but they do slightly less damage. Riki is good in theory but again his kit relies on stacking debuffs and I don't think the AI is smart enough to do that. I only use Riki when I'm farming silver/gold chests.

You can also do a heavy double attack build. Dunban has a skill that heals you every time you crit and Seven has an ability that always makes your double attacks be crits, so you can combine those to never need much healing. It's heavy on affinity coins though.

Yeah that's actually the build I'm running for Shulk. Two Double Attack gems and a Haste gem with Seven's skill and Dunban's skill.

The crits do a lot less damage than I was expecting, it's like 3K and 3.6K for a crit

oh yeah speaking of battle systems I loved the Overdrive mechanic of X, I didn't quite understand it my first run through and it took XB2's Elma DLC for me to actually realize how fun it can be, but my JP X playthrough later on was great building up them infinite overdrives

also it was less of a mess to have Augments just be craftable through material recipes rather than XB1's messy Gem crafting system that's you really don't want to keep up on

I'm just now finishing up on the fallen arm. Man the story fucking jumped to lightspeed when I hit Sword Valley! Ironically, that's when I stopped playing the original all those years ago <_<. Man the battle music here was so unexpected lol. I still forget about it every time until it starts up.

I'm at a point where they gave me a bunch of quests to kill things that are like 20 levels above me. Are these...post game quests? Do they want me to grind up to level 90 to do these quests now? Not sure I've ever seen a game give me post game quests before the game is actually over.

I managed to do some of them that just needed me to grab items by sneaking around monsters but I guess I'll hold off on the rest of them!

Yeah I guess you could consider them postgame quests they'll be there from now until the end of the game so you can do them whenever. You dont' really need to be higher than 80 to finish the main story

I would be for an XCX2 if they want to connect those games to 1 and 2 by making them prequels before Klaus created a new world. XC3 I'm not sure if they would do a new cast again or try to say the ending of XC2 was actually in Shulk's new world and now it's time for everyone to meet up, etc.

The autosave for this game kinda sucks. I had to quickly jump off Xenoblade to do something real quick in Animal Crossing, and in my haste I selected "Go to Title Screen" instead of "Save Game". Dumb mistake, and I knew I'd lose a little bit of progress, but I hoped an autosave would pick up some of the slack.

When autosave DIDN'T kick in:
  • After about 7+ minutes of gameplay
  • After completing three quests
  • After filling in two categories in the Collectapedia
  • After leveling up
When autosave DID kick in:
  • 3 seconds after my last manual save
...way to go, game.

Yeah, that's what I had to eventually assume. Too bad Eryth Sea is just one big area. Feels like they could have reworked that.

Actually, what's weird is the autosave only activated right BEFORE I walked out of Alcamoth, a few steps from my manual save. But after I reloaded and started over, a new autosave was made AFTER I walked out of Alcamoth. I mean, it's not like either were helpful...

I maxed out Party Affinity today using the Stormy Bellagon method. It was a little more time consuming than I remember, but it still might be the fastest method. Got my team up to the mid-90s without setting foot in the last area, so yeah I'll be making use of Expert Mode when I get there.

Expert Mode is an amazing idea, by the way. In a couple days, when I have everyone's Skills earned and weapons/gems/Skill Links optimized, I'm guessing I'll be able to contend with enemies while like 30 levels gimped.

Also finally started to truly tackle Heart-to-Hearts... and I say again this is the best party I've ever seen in a JRPG. Love every one of these guys, even Sharla I guess.

Got a couple Love Sources, so now I'm down to just that one item for the Collectopaedia. (I honestly can't remember even picking up the item I needed for the first trade; the second came from beating the Lv105 Unique on the Fallen Arm)
Colony 6 has given me at least one of seemingly every collectable from Agniratha but the one I'm looking for.

The only advantage would be setting up topple/daze situations more effectively I guess. If the AI is freely using their skills you might not even be able to do that and if they're NOT freely using their skills then they're useless in combat without switching.

They'd probably need to redesign the combat to add more synergy if you could switch characters. Might as well just make it turn based at that point in my opinion.

As someone who hasn't looked up the 'meta' for things I'm having a lot of fun figuring out strategies that work for me. I stacked Max HP Up and Recovery Up gems on Reyn and it's hilarious watching his health swing wildly up and down but never hitting 0. Shulk/Reyn/Riki so far has given me the most success, I've really grown to appreciate Riki's utility with his healing and filling the party gauge.

I have had to stack Aggro Up gems on Reyn and Dunban as well because their AI seems to struggle to hold aggro sometimes, especially when I'm fighting Mechon as Shulk.
