but wooooo change of tactics worked wonders, I was focusing too much on survival, thinking I was doing well as my Shutdown sleeps were effectively cutting people off but really just gotta focus on AoE and blasting damage, including Dunban's Soaring Tempest during chain attacks (also, remembering to buff up Seven's chain attack with second gears)

sad I didn't line up the chain attack on the Ponio wave better, Seven got to continue the chain with Cannon Drone but only the targeted Ponio was in range... it obliterated that Ponio but geez if only it hit more of the others

Was scrolling through the wiki a bit and I realized just how little this game explains about the various systems in it, even with all the tutorials.

I had no idea you deal extra damage to enemies when Vision Tags are active. Is this ever mentioned anywhere?

I don't think it does. There's also no tutorial on the tension mechanic which I kept forgetting to look up how it works. I finally googled it after I beat the game and it would have been some useful information!

It seems like that's just the standard when a game has a spoiler-y character join. It's the same thing in Dragon Quest XI with Eight referring to a certain character

Yeah it's based on when the join and how spoilery they are, especially if there character isn't shown as a party member in commercials and trailers leading up to the game's release.

I had forgotten a lot of how the story unfolds towards the end, so seeing it again now with actual faces is really nice. Like I knew (ch. 15&16) Dickson and Lorithia ended up being bad guys, but I couldn't remember how or why. I also forgot the revelation of how Shulk and Zanza were connected.

switched over to controlling Sharla in the run-up between Refuge Camp to Jade

... hmmmm kinda alright with controlling her with the current setup w/Dunban & Seven racking up Chain Attacks with Shulk's burst on evasion skill link for a full Sharla Break Dunban Topple Seven Daze combo leading into Sharla Headshots (whether continued with a Chain Link, or following the chain attack up with Head Shaker into Headshot)

*edit* oh wait I should swap Dundun out for Reyn, for Sharla's sake :(

*edit2* for real tho I love when Headshot insta-kills, just did to one of the bigger mechon in this group

I remember Sharla helping me a ton in my first playthrough when I had no idea what I was doing and needed a lot of healing. Perhaps that was her role for many players - a "first 30 hours crutch" kind of character, but now it's tough for me to use her. I feel like the one major tweak I'd have liked to see to character abilities would have been to change Sharla's Talent Art into something useful. She definitely needed improvements to contend with the rest of the team.

Sharla is still a staple for me 100 hours in <_< Like I've tried a lot of fights without her but if it's a tough one, I'll have to switch her back in to win.

Then you're just taking too much damage. I've found that Naked Dunban made a more than adequate tank for pretty much the whole story, especially when given Melia's skill that boosts stats when he has no gems equipped

Sparks Fly Restricted was indeed a challenging bump but got dat S sooner than Third Wheel

Really can't be afraid of using Shulk's Battle Soul to get more Talent Guage for the Monado. Also a bit tricky dealing with a pretty bad arts set for Fiora I still can't really tell what the most effective way to use her in the chain attacks were

yeah I've stripped Dunban not too long ago and he's been survivin' fine. pre-Seven I think my main party for a while was Melia/Reyn/Dunban topple-locking, though sometimes switching Melia out for Shulk, or doing a Melia/Riki/Shulk team when I toppling is out of the question (damn tho trying to keep chain attack combos across Shulk and Riki just ain't happening)

... just... only now switched Sharla back in just for the sake of Jade, before M Field I haven't used her since like Satorl Marsh. Still using the Sharla/Reyn/Seven party right now, not sure how much longer

I swapped Seven for Reyn just now because it's apparently the most OP team (Shulk/Dunban/Reyn), but I really prefer Seven because the Party Meter gets built stupid fast. That said, there's no doubt that Berserker -> Magnum Charge -> Sword Drive is the biggest nuke in normal combat.

I watched a random video where a guy went in-depth on who he believed the best characters were and he said that player-controlled Reyn was #1

Which I can believe, it's funny how they make Reyn a fundamentally different character in the second half of the game - he goes from generic Aggro Tank to an insane damage dealer (that also never dies)

I think it's their way of rewarding players for actually still using him, because he's so generic and boring to play

Reyn isn't that interesting in boss fights but he's great for roaming the field and fighting random battles (he gets his big moves off sooner than anyone else) and his voice quotes alone are great

I filled in the makna pool manually

i've mentioned earlier but... it's tougher with the new map filling mechanic of revealing what your radar sees as opposed to the old square acre chunks

of course the acre chunks were more annoying in literally ever other kind of map so just don't torture yourself with pools

Why can Avalance Abaasy let loose with his ultimate attack (Demon Purging Fire) WITHOUT a vision warning? It wipes two of my guys at full health and nearly kills the tank. Not getting a warning for something like that is a cheap way to inflate difficulty.

All side quests and Superbosses completed, Skill Coins at 250, meaning I missed five along the way (I'm cool with that!). Achievement progress is 139/150 and 50/50. The last 11 are achievements I really don't feel like grinding for, though they should be reached naturally if I decide to jump into New Game+.

Play time at 128:00. There's nothing left for me to postpone this - time to put a bow on it.

So XC remains firmly in my top ten games of all time, something which I didn't expect to change... but what a fun month it's been. I'll play through Future Connected and dable in NG+ a bit (I never did on the Wii), but after this and Witcher 3 back-to-back, it's time for a break from turbo gaming.

Hooray, I got the achievement for beating something 10 levels higher than me. Took out some of those level 91 bunnits in Tephra Cave for that Moritz quest (while being level 75-76).

Not gonna lie, I feel a little guilty. Given the way it is woven into the overall narrative, it's very difficult to discuss Xenoblade without at least alluding to that spoiler. I feel like the old timey fans in this topic have tried to be good, but we've probably let some things slip because it's pretty tough not to.

More than anything, I feel so lucky that I experienced that moment spoiler-free back in 2012, where its weight hit me like a cinder block.

I mean it felt pretty obvious who the spoiler was considering that Fiora gets a combat tutorial and she's in the game for all of an hour. I wasn't spoiled that there was a 7th party member but I was still expecting the 7th to join

If you think about it, there really are only a few possibilities that make sense. It has to be someone who already has story relevance, because if it was just some random person introduced at the time of joining then it wouldn't be considered a spoiler. And then it has to have some shock value to it, because again, people wouldn't take the effort to so carefully conceal it if it was just someone like Dickson or Kallian. So that pretty much leaves either a villain turning good or a presumed dead character not really being dead.

Seven's codename should've been Meyneth imho, that way it doesn't reveal that her identity is a spoiler and thus narrow down to options

not like Meyneth's really revealed or explained as an entity until you get the Fiora reveal, and it technically is Meyneth for the most part!
