Eh, Iunno. They've never gone the "Hey, who do YOU want in?" route before. They've just taken whoever was the main player character. Or, in Pokemon's case, whoever was being marketed the most at the time.

It just seems weird to me that they suddenly cared who the director wanted this time but didn't ask the first time and just used Spring Man.

Like said, nothing is impossible, all we can do is assume things. I just personally find it weird that it went

"We want to put something from ARMs in."
"SPRING MAN!"

Are there historically any other cases in video games where a company shits on a ton of their previous work, rendering it pointless, to make a DLC?

I'm not really sure what would be an equal comparison though. FF7 DLC where you start the game as Sephiroth instead of Cloud, where you get Sephiroth's moveset. But Sephiroth is still the main villain (not the one you are playing as though).

How is Ribbon Girl a reused character? Spring Man is an Assist Trophy but Ribbon Girl isn't, right? Ribbon Girl is a Spirit, but so is Min Min.

Right, but in the case of Pokemon it's not really asking "Who do you personally want in," he's basically asking "Who are you marketing?" It still comes down to who is being pushed as a "main" character, so to speak. If you look at the Pokemon chosen, they've all had movies or been majorly featured in the anime.

Like, for example, Sakurai said he chose Incineroar because he liked the wrestler thing/thought it'd make for an interesting character, but it's no coincidence that Incineroar was also Ash's main "starter" that evolved all the way in the Sun/Moon season of the anime, just like Greninja before him, Charizard, etc.

Sub-Zero is more popular but I've heard Boon likes Scorpion so it would probably be Scorpion. I haven't kept up with MK lore so I'm not sure what Liu Kang's current status is but he used to be the protagonist, right?

Scorpion is indeed Ed Boon's favorite character, so if it was his choice, it'd be Scorpion.

Liu Kang's status in the series is weird these days, but I don't think he'd ever be chosen anyway. The ninjas are too popular for it to be anyone else.

Different characters have taken focus in each game, but the most recent MK is very much a Liu Kang story.

I dont think theyd do a MK character, but if they did I would think Liu or Sub would be more likely than Scorpion because Scorp feels more violent to me, but I dunno.

Now Mortal Kombat is interesting, since Liu is the main character, but Scorpion is the poster boy to the point where he's even the logo for NRS. It's a rare case where the most marketed character isn't the main character.

Mortal Kombat really needs to get added, even though I know it won't. It feels like the most iconic fighting game series that is missing, and really should go together with Street Fighter.

It's definitely doable in Smash. After looking at the neutered Fatalities in MK vs. DC, Smash could easily do something like that. In that game, sometimes they just explode into a blast of particles that doesn't look unlike dying to a Thwack in Smash.

Nah, Mortal Kombat is on my list of "will never get into Smash;" I think partially family friendlying characters like Snake and Bayonetta was one thing (same would go for Lara Croft should she get in), but the entire appeal of Mortal Kombat is how gory and violent it is. I just don't see how they could add a Mortal Kombat character and make it even remotely satisfying, or worthwhile.

And we're still talking about the wrong Akira haha

I would have agreed 100% if Mortal Kombat vs. DC didn't exist, where one of Scorpion's fatalities is literally just taking his mask off and blowing fire with no gore whatsoever. They've been willing to tame stuff down before.

Keep in mind that Smash is still all Japanese characters (unless you want to count the Rare characters as Western - those games were published by Nintendo, though). It'd be cool if they added some Western characters someday, but I'm not sure if they ever will. I believe in the Assist Trophies are all Japanese characters (Sim City SNES was developed by Nintendo) - wait, forgot Shovel Knight, never mind.

Mortal Kombat is easy to tame down for smash but I don't think that's getting a rep over Tekken.

Banjo 100% counts as western. Rare always owned the rights to him, that's why Microsoft got him. Heck, they even re-released the first two games on Xbox. Smash is all Banjo has to connect him to Nintendo nowadays.

I was thinking this earlier. I'll be surprised if we actually get any more fighting game characters at this point. I dunno if this was something Sakurai said or not but each DLC fighter is meant to have something different from the starting roster and i think all the bases have been covered in regards to fighting games now. I mean what popular fighting game franchise is left that has a gimmick that could work in Smash?
