I can't remember anything about this movie at all, so I probably need to rewatch it.

All I remember is that film being referenced in another Denzel movie.

Clueless
Rating: 65/100

Dissecting its era of release and the materialism of a oft-maligned social class that deserves every bit of merciless thrashing it gets, Clueless ends up suffering under the stupidity of its characters, running out of gas before the end. What starts as an enjoyable skewering ends up becoming just too long, too bloated. And the dialogue begins to wear out its welcome pretty quickly.

Honestly, pretty freaking forgettable. The crime movie version of a bottle episode, it's serviceable. It's a good movie. But certainly not great.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Rating: 98/100

A seminal teen classic, Ferris Bueller is the ideal. He's the paragon of teenage virtue we all wish we were at that age. And in that representation of perfection, we find a true hero, a man railing against a broken establishment, trying desperately to reach us and teach us that the fleeting nature of life means that we need to embrace the risks and dangers that are inherent in being a rebel so that we can find ourselves.

Uncut Gems
Rating: 83/100

Adam Sandler kills it in Uncut Gems, but my issues with the movie are actually with the "unscripted" feeling created by the script. The idea of having people talk over each other, loop back in conversations, repeat things... it's a great idea. But I think the execution always just feels a little jumbled. The rhythm of conversation is more realistic, but less musical. And I enjoy the movie slightly less because of it. But, in honesty, probably one of the best crime movies of the decade.

Again, not a good movie. However, it's an entertaining movie. Absolutely fucking entertaining. But if you give it a single ounce of thought, it collapses in on itself. Again, Russell carries a movie with his sheer talent as an actor and his undeniable brusque, stupid charm.

Brad Pitt is indecipherable and I love every second of it. Guy is often overlooked as a director, and I get it. He has his absolute stinkers on that IMDb page. But for every one of those, there is a little British crime piece that is hilarious and excellent. Snatch is probably the king of its subgenre.

I'll admit that I'm not an Eddie Murphy guy. Too much of Coming to America feels like comedy sketches produced by Murphy linked together by a flimsy plot. So while the charm of individual scenes can be undeniable, altogether, the plot is pretty shallow.

Knives Out
Rating: 70/100

This is a tough rating, but I think the film burns its ensemble cast and spends too much time focused on the main character. The murder mystery aspect of the story almost feels shrugged off far too early. That said, Benoit Blanc seems perfectly poised to star in an unending string of detective thrillers, and I would be standing in line to watch every one of them.

12 Monkeys
Rating: 98/100

One of my favorite science fiction films of all time, the topsy-turvy nature of 12 Monkeys leaves you constantly questioning everything. Brad Pitt's scenery-chewing performance captivates while the narrative worms its way into your brain, turning over and over again in a way that really seems to capture the idea of insanity. Reality itself is up for debate, and somehow its the rules of time travel that seem the most concrete in this movie, rather than any particular moment in time itself.

Goldeneye
Rating: 93/100

My favorite Bond film, GoldenEye is successful thanks in no small part to the best Bond and the best Bond villain being put together in some fantastic locations. There's also a sorrowful underlying subplot about the archaic nature of Bond in a post-Cold War world, and the constant representations of Soviet menace really underscore the feeling of a ghost coming home to roost.

I want to name three actors for you. Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones. You know what they all have in common? I can't stand them. They all come across as arrogant, self-obsessed douchebags. And here, we have them all in one place, milking their meager talents harder than ever before in a movie that none of them are really qualified to perform in! Chicago is probably the most overrated musical of all time.

For some reason, this movie always feels like the dark horse of the Tarantino family to me. It lacks the Tarantino flavor of his later films, and I've never really been able to get into it in the way I am with the rest of his filmography. That said, everything about it is well-constructed, from the writing to the performance.s It just doesn't stand out in the way his other films do, for me at least.

Billy Joel music, I think, would be better served in a Billy Joel concert. Or a show like Movin' Out. I don't think every great rock 'n' roll artist of the 20th century can pull off a musical, quite honestly, and the reframing of Oliver Twist just didn't land for me. Despite some memorable numbers and characters, overall the movie is a bit of a miss for me.

A lot of the early moving felt like disconnected scenes, and it was only really late in the film that I felt a cohesive plot was going, but at least until that point, I thought a lot of the really sharp satire was landing well. Great cast.

Baby Driver

Edgar Wright knows how to use the full palette of filmmaking to his advantage. Music, editing, lighting, wardrobe, sound mixing. Hell, he even can churn out starmaking or star-reinforcing performances from his entire cast. Nothing about Baby Driver is bad. The only quibble I have with the film is the needlessly saccharine ending, but I can live with that. This movie is just that good.

I'm often torn on this film because, while it's phenomenally written, I absolutely loathe the characters involved. Sometimes, a character, despite great acting and writing, is positioned in such a way as to be absolutely unendurable, and that's both of the leads. It's strange to think, I guess, because Winslet and Carrey are such talented actors, but the roles they play just irk to no end. That said, the concept is great, the script is great, the presentation couldn't be better. It's a high concept piece executed as well as could be. I just can't stand the leads.

Better served, I would imagine, as a mini-series. While the performances of the mid-00s Pride and Prejudice are excellent, and the dialogue we get perfectly suited to the Austen novel, there's a lot of collapse of the societal exploration that makes the book so delectable. At least what we get is great.
