Too long has it been since this wholly self-serving ego trip of a topic has reared its head. My opinions are always fluctuating and changing, and I admit that I've moved more towards television over the last couple of years, but I'm trying to resurrect my passion for standalone films. So feel free to drop a nom, and I'll give you a rating and a blurb.

As always, if I haven't seen a movie, I won't rate it, although I may add it to a watchlist. Don't hold your breath on converting me to whatever niche torture porn masquerading as cinema you're into this week, or bizarre anime film you just discovered on crunchyroll.

The Last Jedi

beating everyone else to it
Rating: 71/100

There is a good amount of beauty to the cinematography of Last Jedi. It's the most beautifully shot Star Wars outside of some really underrated work in Rogue One. And what's more, the controversy around the movie enhances it to some extent. As someone who has been ingrained in the world of comics for a long time, I don't mind liberties being taken from time to time that upend the concept of a franchise; of course, in comics, you have monthly releases and Star Wars fans stew for long periods of time. To me, a dollop of change breeds originality, but Last Jedi loses cohesion very quickly by neglecting the universe in favor of focusing on a few characters. Star Wars is quite honestly at its best when it feels like there are worlds out there; the stakes of Last Jedi become so imperceptibly small that it ultimately lost its importance. It became a story of three ships chasing five ships, and it truly felt like the galaxy straight-up didn't give a damn what happened at the end of it all. It was a Star Wars film where the biggest flaws of the franchise were given too much exposure - those flaws being muddled explanations of the Force.

Robinhood: Men in Tights
Rating: 71/100

As a child, I absolutely loved Men in Tights. The comedy landed so well for me, broad and obvious, like high beams aimed at a deer. But since then, the film has lost some of its luster. Mel Brooks' brand of humor can at times be a drag in its absolute loudness, so his films have started to become a sort-of "have to be in the right mood" style of movie. Cary Elwes fits naturally in the title role, and he proves to be the glue that holds a lot of snapshot disparate scenes in the Robin Hood story together. Add in a pretty memorable Prince John and you have a decent little movie.

Interstellar
Rating: 79/100

Probably my least favorite Chris Nolan movie, all things being equal. I greatly respect the vision Nolan presents, and as always, the concepts are so thoroughly and decisively designed, down to the smallest intricacy, that you almost have to believe that Nolan is more scientist than filmmaker. His ideas just naturally click. The score is amazing, and Matty Mac lands his role. But I found the plot tended to meander and it felt less urgent than the story suggested. That could entirely be chalked up to the nature of the expansive timeline of the story, and I admit that movies that cover decades tend to lose my interest often. Ultimately, I wasn't gripped by the story or the characters in a way that Chris Nolan usually pulls me in. Interstellar just feels a little esoteric for my tastes.

Repo: the Genetic Opera
Rating: 42/100

While I respect the desire to paint a picture that's wholly original in a genre that's been mired by the same-same formula pushed for decades, I ultimately have landed on not enjoying Repo. Its sounds are unpleasant, its plot is lost, and to some extent, Repo just seems to me to be an outcry to the edgy innovation of Rocky Horror without the attention to musicality and storytelling there. Conceptually interesting, but lacking a mind for filmmaking at its helm. Just not enough nuance, not enough polish. Rough and unappealing, although sprinkled with a dash of potential.

Raising Arizona
Rating: 73/100

Ultimately, Raising Arizona was the R-Rated Baby Boom, and as such, it was enjoyable but ultimately forgettable for me. Carried by an awesome Nic Cage performance, and weighed down by Holly Hunter continuing to exist, Arizona has never felt like a Coen Brothers film to me. Instead, I remember being gripped by a surprisingly sorrowful story masquerading behind a white trash comedy that had a lot of charm. Except the charmless Holly Hunter.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Rating: 100/100

One of my all-time favorite movies, Jimmy Stewart absolutely symbolizes the hope I wish I could have in man overcoming the mire of corruption in Washington. Admittedly a purely populist story, I think that, as a piece of history, Mr. Smith represents the always-enduring desire to roll up one's sleeves and make right the wrongs in the world. The film also gives a very nuanced, interesting portrayal of the villainy of corporate politics. One of the rare movies that gets me a little choked up by the end.

Definitely one of the most gripping crime films in history, I absolutely adore the entire film. Even on rewatches, I find myself on the edge of my seat. The ease at which the characters play one another in this strange modern Shakespearean story of two men who are the same and yet entirely different is just fantastic. In another world, Damon and DiCaprio's characters could be living each other's lives. Also, a massive shout-out to the supporting cast who really make this movie. Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, and of course Mark Wahlberg turn this movie into something phenomenal. Especially Wahlberg, who gives a performance way above his caliber as an actor.

No Country for Old Men

Another one of my favorite crime films, No Country is actually a pretty boring book that somehow became an intensely suspenseful film. The sparse use of dialogue really makes every moment count. The entire film is always on a simmer, ready to boil. Naturally, a lot of that feeling of danger comes from the character of Anton Chigurh, whose eyes are like empty voids, pulling you in and repelling you at the same time. I can't rave enough about Javier Bardem in this film, honestly. The entire movie revolves around him, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Reservoir Dogs
Rating: 84/100

While not my favorite Tarantino film, Reservoir Dogs is a brilliantly constructed heist film that eschews the complex nature of a robbery in favor of an unflinchingly brutal portrayal of criminals and crime. In fact, the film becomes almost too uncomfortable to watch at times when it dives into the realm of torture, and that's really where I lose some of my interest. Ultimately, however, I think the dialogue is very strongly written, and the characters carry a fast-paced plot to that top echelon of movie storytelling.

A great, madcap story that has every bit of the Looney Tunes flavor mixed with a Dick Tracy noir sensibility. The fish-out-of-water concept is well-displayed, and despite its Disney origins, this movie feels like anything but Disney. Not only is it an enchanting and off-putting tale, but its really a remarkable achievement in filmmaking. Before the era of CGI, the animation is so seamlessly integrated into the live-action. It really creates a fantastic world that you don't want to leave.

Castaway has never been so good. The latest, greatest rewrite of a Swiss Family Robinson style of adaptation to a hostile environment, The Martian is well-treated by its star, Matt Damon, who certainly has the down-to-Earth charisma necessary to make the film work well. I have no real complaints about it at all. It's not Earth-shattering filmmaking, but it's a great little adventure that never feels any less than urgent.

I'm a huge proponent of postwar spy style films, and combined with a phenomenal character in Harry Lime, you have something really special here. Special mention needs to be made with regards to the filming and lighting; it keeps you off-kilter the entire film. When you're a little dizzy, when it's a little hard to get your bearings, a plot with twists and turns becomes so much more engaging, and The Third Man excels at keeping you off-balance.

Ultimately, I think it's probably #3 on my Wes Anderson film list, behind two other Wes Anderson movies, both of which feature Wes Anderson ideas about Wes Anderson concepts.

Actually, in the scheme of great 80s SNL movies, this one of the ones I can't get on-board with. The cast is largely unlikable, and I even find Bill Murray's character a bit of a whiff in comparison to most of his other roles. 80s comedy rarely leaves me feeling numb - either it's great or it's terrible. Caddyshack is a rare "eh" film for me. Maybe I just don't like golf enough.
