Honestly, I feel like there are only two base genders.

I understand that people identify as all sorts of others ones that arent fully described by male or female, but Ive yet to see a gender that is divorced enough from the standard m/f spectrum that I would consider it to be its own exclusive gender. >_>

I mostly see third+ genders as a semantic distinction, but if they dont see it that way then whatever. Its their life. Im not gonna tell them how to live it.

There are two genders in most cultures across the planet and across time that track with the two sexes, categorized by appearance of external genitalia at birth based on presumed reproductive capacity; globally rare, but in existence are societies that have three or five gender categories, which are typically a not-so-flattering way of dealing with intersex conditions and homosexuality. In theory, there could be any number of genders, but practically the distinctions would be grouped together after a little while.

Furthermore, across cultures that represent more than two genders, female people are overwhelmingly still shunted into categories that mirror the common understanding of 'Woman-as-nurturer,' a role which is enforced by their reproductive capacity regardless of their sense of self. This is because oppression structures do not care about inner fulfillment.

There are innately and naturally zero genders, just like there is not a real thing such as "Money" out in the ether of the universe, despite the number of currencies that exist and the real harm that Money does.

There are only two genders from a scientific perspective, I guess maybe three if you count intersex. There are absolutely no more than three genders.

Majority of people here seem confused about what is what. Let me clear the room and educate most of you.

Sex, which is made up of 3 categories I said on post #31

Gender which is based on roles on how society see's a person based on the sex. It is based on several more categories such men born with breast, women with an abnormal amount of facial hair, albinos, red hair (commonly and insulting known as gingers) etc....

Gender identity is 70+ which people who are more aware of this or take it's importance seriously tend to change and flip flop between them sometimes to help them when they're in any type of situation, they're usually insecure and often times change the way they identify they base it on feelings sometimes even peer pressure or to try to seem unique and stand out for attention.

This. Although I identify as cis male, I grew up in a family dominated by women. I played barbie dolls with my sisters, played jump rope in gym class while the guys played basketball, absolutely hated (and still hate) sports, so a lot of people thought I was confused growing up because I didn't follow gender norms.

Fiiiiine, but calling eyes "blue" or "brown" or any color word is reductive too, then. The confluence of factors which results in a creature that creates ova is female and that which creates sperm is male. Reproduction is about ramming things together and seeing what sticks, not perfection and the sublime. This expansion of knowledge is useful in the human project, but the lay definition of sex can make generalities like "the Earth is round [no, it's an irregular shape!]" and "egg and sperm meet to begin the development of a fetus [no, the first stage of cleavage is called embryogenesis and the egg and sperm don't 'meet' since they completely lack agency!].

The oppression structure gender exists because about half of the natural population can be made to birth young due to the confluence of their biology, and 51% of the population has external genitalia that overwhelmingly correlate with that reproductive capacity and therefore receive the subordinate socialization within the gender structure of their local culture and time.

There's a lot to know about human biology that we don't know yet, but that's no reason to pretend humanity hasn't had a pretty strong track record of figuring out who the ones who likely-could-create-ova and raising them in a different way than the ones who likely-could-create-sperm.

I don't think there's a number you can put on it. My partner is non-binary and it's something I wonder about for myself. I went through a confused period of identifying and living as a woman, I don't think that's right for me but I don't think I'm a man as everyone sees me either. I just don't publicly question or draw attention to my gender because my family wouldn't understand.

you're making the same mistake as you were initially. sex is a lot more complicated than "sperm or egg" and this reductive binary is no longer sufficient for scientific purposes.

like if you were to graph the sex of every single person en earth, you'd get something like this:

people with two testes, a penis, a prostate, xy chromosomes, whose bodies produce certain amounts of certain hormones, etc. would be at one peak. people with two developed breasts, a uterus, a vagina, ovaries, xx chromosomes, whose bodies produce certain amounts of certain hormones, etc. would be at the other. every variation from that would be a little bit more distant from a peak.

treating it as though only the peaks existed worked most of the time, for most people. but it's not the way things actually are, and it's insufficient for our purposes now
