The wedding industry is a fucking scam in general but this is just fucking disgusting. They're getting a ton of hate online. They even faked an employee's death due to the online harassment, even though the employee died two years ago.

This is a tricky one from a business/consumer perspective. what's their policy, etc. Like if you get a cake made for a birthday and the person dies the day before, after you picked up the cake, would you expect them to take it back and refund you? Does the photographer charge a cancellation fee of some sort, how close was it to the event? did they potentially lose out on other bids as a result of taking this one?

...where they lose me is how they act like assholes about it for absolutely no reason.

No with most wedding related businesses you have to put a deposit down. Usually half then the rest a month or two prior to the date. Videographers usually have very little expenses in terms of their actual service to the customer, so they're basically just stealing money from them because the industry is built that way.

If someone dies months prior to the event and you didn't make the cake, and you still have time to pick up another client and recoup funds, then the baker should refund the money. That's not a difficult situation at all.

Side note, my coworker had to deal with getting an extended date on her wedding plans due to the quarantine and it took her 2 months for the company to say "okay we'll keep your money and charge you and extra fee to reschedule to next year". That was their best solution after tirelessly calling them, the alternatives were them taking her money and no wedding, or wedding during quarantine in April.

See, reading that website i could have totally sympathized with them. Having worked retail I've been in similar situations. If someone came in with an altered suit and said "well, it was for a wedding but the groom died", policy wise I'd have to turn it away. I can't let the personal story cause me to deviate from policy. Now when i was a manager I'd have some control over making a one time exception, etc, but i fully understand that some places don't allow that regardless of the situation...

But then they had to make that FB post and just overall act like complete pieces of shit about it. As a consumer i fully get this guys desire to fight for his refund as well. It doesn't sound like they have a written policy. Its just them saying "look, this how it is in the BIZ", and even that comes off as extremely douchey.

This type of business can typically stand to gain far more from a situational show of goodwill than from fighting hard for the money. Making a loyal customer > making a commission.

I'm not even going to go into the reprehensible actions that followed, there's just no excusing them for that.
