Plenty of people hate the game dude, sure some people like it but you can say that about any game. In my experience the most maligned entries in the series when only looking at numbered titles in the main series are the following..

VIII
II (not the SNES one)
XV

The weird amosphere is better than the game itself. It feels like they glued parts of different games together. I heard the development was rushed so maybe it explains it.

I love FF8. I grew to love the other two PS1 entries as well but I was always enthralled by the world of FF8

I enjoyed 8. I think in part I enjoyed the more realistic graphics compared to the blocky polygons of 7, I also loved the card mini-game. Even some ideas like junction and drawing of spells was pretty neat. I really enjoyed it.

It wasn't 'FF' enough. You got money through an allowance system. You never actually replace your starting weapons. Magic must be collected instead of the usual MP pool. I don't think the story was bad, it was the gameplay that never felt right.

The people who hate it are very vocal about hating it. I think it's right up there with my other favorites (VI, IX, and X).

It has a wonderful soundtrack, some pretty memorable characters, and the draw system is fun to use and abuse.

People hate it but I love it despite its flaws. I just like the world they are in so much.

Plus, and this may piss people off, every time I play I intentionally level up to 100, usually doing so in my prep for the final dungeon. Even though enemies scale with you the game isn't really difficult at level 100 if you have even halfways decent magic to junction

I don't like 8. I'm on board for the first several hours, then disc 1 ends and the game quickly devolves into unintelligible bullshit, and it's about that time you start to get to grips with how leveling actually works and you realize you just spent several hours screwing yourself over.

The basic card game is really just using the numbers on the cards to attack or defend certain directions. If you have a higher number in a direction next to an opponent's card you flip it. If you have more total cards when the board is filled on it you win.

Then there are more advanced rules you get later on and i never bothered to learn. You can stop the spread of rule adoptions if you know what to do however when getting cards like squall or Laguna i kinda do a save and reload hoping to luck into a battle where i win despite not knowing advanced rules

I haven't played it. I might get around to it when I buy the remastered version. FF7 is amazing though.

Ff8 remastered is not worth the upgrade if you have the older PC steam release. However if it's all you can get its fine. Slightly better textures in places and not much else.

I told you! Is better than VII, and worst than IX.

How do you play the card game?

each card has 4 numbers. Top, bottom, left and right. If you lay the card down on the board, any sides left open can be attacked by the opponent. If the opponent has a card with a higher number than yours on that specific side, they can attack that card and control it for the match.

Youre just trying to control as many cards on the board as possible before the match ends. If you win, you get to take one of their cards. If you lose, they steal one of your cards. (You can usually try to win them back from the same person if you lose an important card)

once you get farther into the game, the rules will start changing depending on what region youre in (every nation plays by different rules). Thats where it gets much more complicated and not as fun

Compared to VII and IX its mediocre. The junction system is confusing at best for beginners as well as the card game. Its basically a guides-required play if you want a perfect game. Ive never felt that way about another FF game that Ive played.

Came in here to say this, more or less. The game starts out flawed but okay and then jumps off a cliff in terms of narrative quality, as if a different writer took over or the writer just completely lost interest.

And the gameplay, don't even get me started. Yes, I understand it. No, that doesn't magically make it good.

It's one of the first games I played where I felt the aesthetic was prioritized over the substance, and I think I tend to be particularly harsh on it for that reason.
