9/11 didn't have big impacts on the world.
Covid is fucking economy badly worldwide and is leading to a huge number of deaths.

The worst part is, we still don't even understand covid after half a year. There are no proper confirmations when it comes to lasting damage, we don't know if we can become immune or vaccinate against it, we don't know what kind of surprises a second wave of infections will have and without vaccines we will never have a way of ending the outbreak because it's infective invisibly for up to 4 weeks.

I know most Americans were shocked by 9/11. But it was a tiny blowback compared to what U.S. foreign policy does to the rest of the world.

Covid-19 has affected the entire world.

Counter-argument: 9/11 led to U.S. foreign and domestic policies both becoming more dystopian and nightmarish.

Are you saying you believe 9/11 positively affected US foreign and domestic policy? I didnt say it was good before.

Thanks for the book recommendation, I found a pdf of it online.

Not at all. I was trying to say that US foreign policy has always been brutal. 9/11 was a blowback from it, but tiny in comparison.

Some would argue that there was no specific "enemy" to "hate" as a result of 9/11, so we made one up.

Then were in agreement, and I didnt mean the event itself was potentially worse than corona, but the actions taken home and abroad by the U.S. government as a result of 9/11 could be argued to be worse than COVID-19 has been so far (Patriot Act, increased imperialism, etc.). Some estimates place the Iraqi death count from the war at up to 1,000,000.

As someone who was too young to really understand 9/11 when it happened, it seemed like 9/11 was more terrifying. People, specifically Americans, had no idea if, when, and where other attacks would occur. I cant imagine the fear that people would have lived with.

In contrast, corona is less outright terrifying and more of a slow burn. After the initial shock caused by the shutdown, people have settled into a new normal. Its hard to call looking over your shoulder for new terrorist attacks a new normal.

Point being that its silly to compare them. Theyre different beasts altogether.

Coronavirus has killed nearly 100 times as many people as 9/11. That alone is worth commenting on.

Also led to more militarized police, and more intrusive unjust laws in the name of national security.

Plus made airlines suck even more and had some notable economic effects. Insurance companies, airlines, the stock market, tourism etc. took a huge battering after 9/11.

Covid 19 is such a low-key assassin because of it's slow burn. It's evident in this topic / in this world how people underestimate it and now look what's happening. Just a few months in we're over 300k deaths and hundreds of thousands currently sick and may have permenant damage to people's health and the economies of the world.

9/11 didnt directly kill a million. Bush just used it as an excuse to go to Iraq. We all know the US just wanted the oil.
