the netherlands drops from #14 to #15 on the list of countries with the most cases, as peru passes it. the amount of new cases per day hasn't been in the quadruple digits for about a week now.

sports clubs are open again (the covid measures still apply, though).

Interest poll results on our site today, less than 3% votes for having the disease or even knowing others that have it. I, too, can name maybe ten people at most who had it that I know personally.

Didnt the stats say 90% of people will have this? Maybe Im misremembering.

70-90% of the world will get it before it is done most experts think. I know no one personally who has it myself. But, that means nothing.

70-90% is if a vaccine never comes out, moon. And that could be over 20 years with lockdowns.

So theyre talking about over a persons lifetime, essentially (if a vaccine never comes out, not 20 years)?

If so, there is a massive knowledge / communication gap because when most people hear 90% of people will get it, theyre thinking from this first wave.

It would be a lot faster than 20 years if no lockdowns. Lockdowns would in theory spread it out over 20 years by estimation. Lockdowns are supposed to keep numbers down and under breaking points until a vaccine is made.

The 70-90% mark would be hit in a couple years or so by my estimation if left unchecked.

Yes and no.

They have all their eggs in the basket for a vaccine in a year or two. They don't realize if a vaccine doesn't happen they would last this long. (Assuming antibodies don't last forever).

However, confidence on a vaccine is relatively high and expected to be relatively quicker to develop than the usual 10-20 years they usually take.

As a country total likely yes but that is backed almost entirely on the New York area and their population size.

Breaking it down into smaller regions some places have reached peak and others have not.

There are few areas that have gotten the curve through a significant downswing however, which is where phased reopening actually should begin.

I went to Home Depot today and two employees were telling a very Karen looking woman that she couldn't take her mask off in the store (they had a screener at the door so I'm assuming she had it on then took it off as soon as she got inside).

Both of those guys were wearing bandanas for masks which isn't an issue but neither one of them had them covering their nose.

Social distancing fatigue is starting to penetrate my inner circle. My coworker (a strict follower of social distancing) admitted to an extended family get together this weekend. My mother called and is trying to get me to come over for Mother's Day (havent seen her since stay at home order in place, she's also been a strict follower supposedly).

The nice weather this weekend didn't help. I myself am starting to break down a bit on my hardnose stay at home stance. I mean, what's a little get together gonna hurt? Surely they have a much better chance of getting infected at a grocery store than by a small family visit?

And let's be honest, this isn't going away until a vaccine comes out. If people are already experiencing quarantine fatigue now, just wait until the summer fully kicks in.

There are a couple food processing plants in our state that have had coronavirus breakouts. My sister used to live near one where she taught Spanish speaking students. A lot of their parents were illegal immigrants who worked at one of the plants. I can imagine this would add an extra layer of complexity to the situation, as they may be more hesitant to seek healthcare, or even stay home when sick.

Yup, the current situation is not sustainable, not unless the death count suddenly massively soars by thousands a day (which no one wants to happen). Like you said, warm weather is going to force states to loosen things up, whether they really want to or not.

The crazy thing is, of course they're more likely to get sick from an intimate family gathering! Contrast to a grocery run where most people are wearing masks and trying to stay the heck away from everyone else.

Just think how shitty you would feel if you went to a family gathering, only to feel sick a day or two later. Turns out you were asymptomatic at the gathering, and while hugging everyone before leaving, managed to pass the disease to your parents and grandparents. And then 2 weeks later one of them dies.

I know, I know, awful hypothetical situation and all that but still. It weighs on my mind, even though I know eventually things will have to get back to normal.

At least through summer I imagine.
Never realistic there, basically. We're mostly opened up by July, one way or another. Whether it's because people wanna go shopping, go outside, meet people, or whatever else, rules are steadily getting broken and it ain't the protestors, it's the silent majority.

They'll still oppose opening everything up.
But they'll break the rules too. Which, if you just look at the mask practices, was a given.

NYC has also had an influx of people outside, Wendy's is packed. Most people are wearing masks but a good chunk being dumb or silly with them. Cops have been enforcing more technically but after yesterday even THAT is going to get pushback because one had the brilliant idea to be an asshole and swing at a guy, take him down, with it all on tape. He's on desk duty now. Incoming settlement there and it takes just one to get protests. Especially with a very testy populace.

Completely agreed. There were a few polls conducted that demonstrated a solid majority (70%+) support social distancing guidelines and have great hesitation in socializing like normal. It's just that it seems in practice a lot of people figure it doesn't really need to apply to them specifically and they're betting on others to follow guidelines to make their own breach less of a problem.

Honestly it leaves me despairing with little more to go on or hope for than I really fucking hope the lower IFR estimates are right, that there's some kind of selective pressure making it less dangerous over time and that simple things like vitamin D really are making a huge difference.

This is one of the arguments people who have been violating the stay at home order since day 1 have been making. I initially looked at those people with shock. Like, how could they be so irresponsible, selfish, and careless? But a month has gone by and despite them seeing everyone and going everywhere, they never got the virus nor have anyone they've known. Obviously, this is just a short sample size of the people I know personally that have been breaking the stay at home order, but the longer this goes on, it's creating a false sense of security in people who are following the orders. If my friend isnt getting the virus by going to see his family and friends every other day, what are the chances I'd get the virus if I go see someone once?

The other new argument that's coming up is how long are we suppose to avoid our older relatives? Until a vaccine? Am i not supposed to physically see my mom for a year or two? Is that really the only responsible approach? If you say, "after the stay at home order is lifted, you can see her" or "wait a few more months and you can see her." Well, the coronavirus will still be around at that point, so I have as much chance of giving it to her now as I would giving it to her later. Until we both get vaccinated.

I just feel like I'm slowly turning to the other side on this. Every day they seem to be the more reasonable and my own the less reasonable.
