I loved it. With Abrams having to connect every single thing in this series with the original trilogy, it was so nice to not have someone connected. It also didn't hurt that the scene itself was really emotional and well-done...especially with Ren making Rey say the words.

And, of course, JJ had to ruin it and retcon it and it made the Rey/Ren exchange make no sense as a result. But, as we've established, JJ Abrams is an awful director.

I also loved Snoke getting axed...as an obvious Palpatine ripoff, I felt his death was them again breaking off from the spectre of the original trilogy and letting Ren do the heavy lifting...and, of course, Abrams undoes this as well with a lazy rehash of Palps and Ren being tossed into the lackey role again. Good times, JJ. God, you suck.

Not sure how it's a subversion when she's still closely related to a major figure in the franchise, who was also a powerful Force user on top of that.

Unless all those "Paply's granddaughter" stuff in Rise was fake spoilers?

I think it's dumb, in stories, that because someone is strong/powerful, it must mean that they're somehow related to someone who is also strong/powerful.

and having notable characters having to somehow be related to someone else in the series just makes the galaxy seem really small in SW, IMO.

Yeah it was great. Doesn't make for a mystery box people can piece together supposed clues for and doesn't make the entire star wars universe feel tiny and in the hands of about 2 families though so see how it annoyed people

i like the idea of getting away from having to be a descendant of another character. i think people thought finn would be either mace or lando's kid which would have been lame.

but having that be a question we're supposed to be interested in, and then saying they were actually nobody, was like...okay cool?

Hindsight made me think yeah, her parents are virtually nobody but her grandparent was a somebody lol, so I kinda liked it looking back now.

What about when she had that Force experience in the hole on Ahch-To and she saw only herself reflected back? To me that said everything.

No because it was meta. Rey was not thinking that her parents were super key people. She just wanted to know who they were. Most of our parents are nobodies but we like to know who they are. Moreover if they were just nobodies why wouldn't the mirror thing show them .

I thought it was interesting, but I didn't think it would neccessarily take, because A, how would Kylo know that; and B, who was to say he wasn't just lying to mainpulate her?
