As a millennial I gotta say I was fucking miserable until I just stopped giving a shit about keeping up with all the trends and flare pretending to keep up with shit I don't care about, that I think more need to do. Mental health went way up after separating myself from almost all social media too.

It's easy to fall into an unending circle of toxic bullshit and not really realize what it's doing to you online these days.

Apparently you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to care about climate change and other issues that you personally wouldn't care about because what about the future generations!.

There's no limit to the greed of corporations. One brilliant guy has an idea, hey what if we owned water, or this or that. We could make a lot of money! Then another genius goes yeah, what's the worst that could happen, some people die or live in misery, who cares. What, you're not against people making money, right? So a few reflections:
1) You mention "Forced involvement", the second article is about people that have been active for years
2) The post you were responding to was from somebody saying they shut off social media, which isn't the same as the active involvement mentioned in the second article.
3) The first article is from 1994, well before ANY social media, so doesn't really support your argument
4) Perhaps most damming, the second article utilizes grounded theory - this is a qualitative method (found shared themes) not quantitative (finding one group greater than another). The article states "All SJH had preexisting burnout", but that doesn't help your argument that "Forced involvement in social movements" leads to burnout. It could be that people already more idealistic are attracted and thus have "higher to fall"(even mentioned in the discussion section).

Also you didn't answer my first question - was the poster really talking about SJH movements when he/she said turning off social media helped his/her mental state?
