They specifically say they have to increase recruitment to crew all these star destroyers.

We see at least one of them was already crewed. And people had to build the other thousands upon thousands of Star Destroyers in a measily 30 years even if they weren't crewed yet. Took the Empire decades to build just first Death Star and that's when they had the galaxy's resources at their disposal.

Generally liked it, but I am super pissed that I managed to get myself spoiled for two out of the three sequel trilogy movies BEFORE THEY EVEN CAME OUT.

For Episode VII, an alt of somebody here (I believe Timjab) posted about Han dying, and for this one some fucking douchebag posted on a completely unrelated reddit thread like a week before it came out with a list of like five spoilers which I assumed were made up, but apparently not! The only one I both read and remembered before reporting him was about Rey being Palpatine's granddaughter, so then when they brought up her parentage again (and then definitely when she used the force-lightning) I realized it wasn't fake and I had a harder time enjoying the rest of the movie.

Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?

Biggest disappointment with the movie is that it didn't take Hux's "fuck you, I just want Ren to lose" in a direction that had him wind up trying to help Palpatine to the detriment of both the other factions somehow.

Obviously hard to do when he died in the very next scene but whatever

Other than that, people have pretty much already said the things that line up with my thoughts. Decent but not great movie overall. Watchable as a fan of the franchise.

RotJ is a terrible movie, easily prequel tier.

Never understood how someone can still watch that and say "yeah, the classic trilogy is untouchable".

I like Solo a lot and I dont know why either. I think my expectations were way too low and I also like that it felt kind of standalone. It was also a bit of a mess which I appreciate a lot, keeps me on my toes and makes me laugh. I also admittedly dont even like star wars much, I dont know how I've even see them all because I have like no attachment to the franchise

Rise and the first two prequels were a lot of a mess though which is why they're at the bottom

Yeah, there were a few "science-based" complaints i could've had about the film, but after a few things in 8 i completely gave up

it's a fantasy series, poe has pilot magic, it's really not important exactly how they got away, they could've just had him fly up and do a normal jump

RotJ has problems but - and I think this is especially true for things like Star Wars - individual moments are often "better" than a movie being solid the whole way.

And that 60-second-ish sequence where Luke screams at Vader and wails on him, with that great score in the background, and then slices off the hand, and Hamill's eyes getting wide with vengeance and anger before he stops and realizes what's happening is...possibly my favourite movie moment. And I like the Ewoks fine and I like the stuff on Tatooine. Good shit all round really.

As someone who doesn't really like Star Wars, I think most of the movies are kind of bad (but fun) and that society as a whole is crazy for elevating the series to the level it's on. The throne room scenes in RotJ are great - rest of the movie ranges from mediocre to questionable. Still probably the third-best movie in the series!

I guess that makes sense. I very much DON'T give movies passes for individual great scenes, no matter how good. Consistency is much more important to me, which RotJ very much is not.

I mean god, Harrison Ford in that movie has just absolutely given up on giving a shit.

Harrison Ford more or less gave up on the role after Episode 4. He's said as much. Anyone who read the interviews he gave on Star Wars wouldn't have considered it a spoiler that Han got killed off in Episode 7! He'd been trying to get them to do that for decades!

Before going to the theater to see Rise of Skywalked I decided to rewatch the original trilogy on Disney+. Made it through the first two movies, and partway through RotJ I just resorted to watching Youtube footage of only the Luke scenes towards the end of the movie.

You know how there's a Jar Jar-less edit of Phantom Menace? They should make a edited version of Return of the Jedi and call it the "Just the Luke scenes Edition".

Basically no characters on the Rebellion side have any reason to exist in that movie besides Luke. The rest of the movie is worthless.

Yeah moments matter in a huge way to me.

If I was a movie critic and got paid to surgically analyse the movies, or if I was in some way motivated to rewatch them with the specific purpose of ranking them, I might well end up saying ESB is better than RotJ, or putting RotJ considerably lower down the list. Maybe, who knows? But I'm gonna just embrace subjectivity with Star Wars. RotJ top feels right.

For another example, Rogue One is probably a couple of spots higher on my list than it "should" be, or otherwise would be, because of Slasher Vader. With TLJ I think of Luke walking out vs. the First Order with, again, the fantastic score and amazing visuals of it (among a couple of others like Snoke and Yoda, TLJ is great shit man).

The most awkward part of RotJ to me is when Luke goes to Endor and has some random adventures and then suddenly goes ah fuck, wait, I'm in the wrong part of the movie, this is the B-plot

Yeah, Luke, Vader, and Palpatine in the throne room is the best scene in the entire series. I give RotJ a ton of credit for that part of the movie alone.

And you know what, it speaks volumes that one of my favourite things I've ever seen in a cinema is when Yoda fought Dooku. I was a kid and it made me SO HAPPY, I fucking loved it so much... and yet Attack of the Clones is still filled with so much shit that I can't possibly put it anywhere other than last. But it is the reason I can't truly hate that movie.

I'm not sure if that undercuts my point entirely or if it's a testament to just how bad a lot of AotC is.

Yeah, but Yoda/Dooku is all style and no substance. I love style as much as anyone, but it doesn't really add anything to the movie. It's pure fanservice.

Well...some of the end of Phantom's is solid, they put in some effort there.

Really the only good stuff to come from the prequels period, ignoring side content that was made based off of them, are Obi Wan and Super Yuckin' Palpatine.

I think this is the main reason people have comparatively warmed up to the Prequels over time. A lot of good side content based off of it has come out over time. It's the best time period in Star Wars to set a game, or a book, or a TV show or whatever. The Clone Wars animated series is still the best thing the franchise has ever done.

It's enough to make someone forget that the actual movies are dogshit.

It's amazing how bad the cgi looks these days. There's "dated", and then you have that stuff that looks like it came from a PS2 FMV.

The problem is how they went all in by making entire scenes and sets cgi, which sticks out so bad compared to it just being a character or object on a physical set. That really hurts the lightsaber battles since it looks like they're fighting on one of those pre-rendered Final Fantasy map backgrounds.
