#6. Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

The Good: There's so much fanservice and nostalgia in here that it feels like a lovingly crafted farewell letter to the fans. It's reminiscent of the Citadel DLC in Mass Effect 3 in that regard. It was nice to see them give good roles to C-3PO (who somehow crafts some of the funniest and most emotional moments in the movie) and Chewbacca (who finally got the medal he should've gotten back in Episode IV). It was fun seeing Lando again, too. I found it hilarious that the sequels finally acknowledged the prequels with Palpatine's throwback to an Episode III quote when the first two movies basically pretended they didn't exist, but I guess now they had a new movie to pretend didn't exist...! Perhaps the most unexpected moments were the Wedge cameo and the Han cameo (since I figured Harrison Ford was ready to be done with the series after Episode VII and it's not like Han was going to have a Force Ghost). I was glad to finally see Rey, Finn, and Poe get some dedicated time together, and while they'll never measure up to Luke, Han, and Leia as a trio, they're pretty fun here.

The Bad: They expend way too much effort trying to undo the stuff the fanbase didn't like from Episode VIII. As I said before, I do appreciate that they tried to craft something as a tribute to the fans, there are times you don't need to listen to the fans. Rey being a nobody was one of the best things Episode VIII did, and they backpedaled super hard to give her a famous heritage. I kinda wish they had stuck by keeping Kylo Ren a villain instead of trying to redeem him and then promptly kill him off, too. I also feel like they try a little too hard to wrap up every single thing in one movie to the point that they don't really give satisfactory explanations for them. I thought Episode IX was just supposed to be the end of this current arc, not the end of episodic Star Wars as a whole, but I guess I was mistaken! I mentioned this to user SaveEstelle when we discussed this privately, but Episode IX reminds me a lot of Metal Gear Solid 4. They feel obligated to try to give you answers to everything, even if it's basically the equivalent of "nanomachines." I also wonder if it won't be like MGS4 in the sense that, the more people remove themselves from the emotional highs of the movie and start thinking about all the issues and inconsistencies, they might not think so highly of it. When I first beat MGS4, I thought it was one of the five best games I had ever played. Now I'm not sure I'd consider it a top 50 game (maybe I should make a list to find out...!). Also, I've touched on this before, but the Rey/Ben kiss was gross and had no reason to exist. There was no sexual/romantic tension between them up to this point.

The Best: Other than the aforementioned kiss above, I thought Rey was great in this movie. I'm not a superfan of hers the way user SaveEstelle is, but I appreciated her arc here as she struggled with her heritage and her own failures. I loved the scene with her exploring the ruins of the second Death Star, as well as the moment where all the Jedi spoke to her at the end (reminded me of a similar moment toward the end of Kingdom Hearts III!). I also loved the new little droid they introduced (Dio was its name, right? They only mentioned it in passing), as well as the little alien that hacked C-3PO. Ultimately, if you can give me a story with a good cast and cast chemistry, I'll be satisfied, and Episode IX definitely delivered on that front, regardless of its other shortcomings.

#5. Episode VII: The Force Awakens

The Good: People knock Episode VII for being too "safe" and just repeating a lot of the story beats of Episode IV, but I honestly think that's what the series needed to restore faith from the fanbase after the prequels were largely considered to be a disappointment. transience wrote something similar about how Dual Destinies righted the Ace Attorney ship by largely playing it safe after Apollo Justice nearly killed the series, and he was totally right (read transience's game ranking topic if you haven't yet. His stuff is always good). I think Force Awakens served a similar purpose. Just like Dual Destinies brought back Phoenix Wright to get things back on course, Episode VII brought back a lot of the original cast to do the same thing and they did their job well. Han Solo in particular was fantastic here. He might have had the best role of any of the returning characters in the sequel trilogy. It's kinda strange that he essentially plays the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi here, but he somehow nailed it!

The Bad: The raid on Starkiller Base really feels kinda half-baked. Approaching at lightspeed and somehow disengaging before ramming through the planet feels even more implausible than Episode VIII's lightspeed ram, but no one ever comments on that...! But they essentially just dumb luck their way through lowering the shields with no plan whatsoever and it somehow works! Also, this is more a critique of the sequel trilogy as a whole moreso than Episode VII itself, but I really loved Finn here and it felt like they didn't know what to do with him in the next two movies. They sort of teased something in Episode IX but never really confirmed anything or capitalized on it. Hopefully Finn gets some sort of Disney+ show or something to flesh him out!

The Best: Han Solo's death scene was really powerful here and one of the more emotionally charged moments in the series. I think part of why it's so powerful is because you know Han Solo ain't coming back because it's not like he's going to have some sort of Force Ghost, which kinda "cheapens" death in the Star Wars universe for some of the characters. Also, good on Chewie for landing that crossbow shot to Kylo Ren in the wake of Han's death. I also enjoyed the final lightsaber duel between Kylo and Finn/Rey. It was really fun and I loved the snow setting for it.

I decided to introduce my fiancee to Scrubs, and we watched the first four episodes. I insisted we at least get through the first four because "My Old Lady" is the episode I realized this show was something special. She already seemed to really be enjoying it before we got there though! Based on her reactions to the characters from when we were watching, she seems to really like Dr. Cox and the Janitor the most so far.

Star Wars Physics: TLJ's lightspeed ram isn't implausible! If anything, the implausible thing about it is that the tactic isn't used more often. You get something moving at sufficient velocity and you can bust up just about anything! Like I saying in my TLJ post, not only could you eliminate the need for the Death Star (you could surely destroy planets by ramming them at a speed close enough to c), but you also could simply destroy the Death Star itself by ramming it with something close enough to c!

Now TFA's "approach a planet at lightspeed and then drop out at the last second" is probably a lot less plausible but I think it would require (at least on my part) on how hyperspace is supposed to "work." Trying this in conventional space is absurdly implausible because even writing off the fact that you can accelerate/decelerate to lightspeed on a dime in Star Wars the window for dropping out of it instead of crashing into the surface would be ridiculously small. No chance you could realistically pull it off with a mechanical switch that requires actually physically pulling/pressing it and honestly I doubt even an onboard CPU could react fast enough. Weirdly, The Force could let you handwave a lot of that away if it weren't Han doing it! But also, looping back up to the above, had they failed and ended up ramming Starkiller Base at lightspeed it probably would have accomplished the mission of destroying it anyway! ...at the cost of the crew's life of course. >_>

I think it has. Sorta.

I think bunches of servers have been grouped up more or less. You can party/group/raid across servers that way. There were still a few things that were dependent on the same server in spite of that though, IIRC, Raids on Mystic Difficulty had to be done with a group from the same server only. There was probably other stuff.

This was circa 2017/Legion at least.

Yeah, that's the one thing sticking in my mind. I think it's possible that you were normally in your server's own world but if you entered LFG for a Dungeon/Raid/Whatever you could get pulled seamlessly into another one. I just can't recall exactly.

You 100% could use it for Dungeons of all difficulties, including Mythic and Mythic+, and Raids at Normal/Heroic because I was on a dead server and that was the only way I could do any of that content. I learned of the Mythic Raid restriction when on a whim I wanted to see if I could try a Raid I was very comfortable with on Heroic and try for Mythic only to run into that. You could even LFG for quests IIRC so it became pretty ubiquitous.

I would have been able to answer this concretely 3 years ago lol but now all my knowledge has already evaporated.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

If I hadn't been made aware ahead of time that the pilot movie sucks but the show gets good eventually, I definitely would not have continued watching after this mess. Everything involving Jabba's son is so stupid and tragically that's somehow like the main plot. Why in the name of eff are you trying to get me to sympathize with Jabba the Hutt by showing me that he cares about his offspring? And why am I being treated to such recurring "jokes" as Anakin and Ahsoka calling said son "Stinky" because lol babies stink or whatever? This is miserable trash that deserved to bomb at the theaters and critically and among the fans and I think this is actually the first and only time all three have happened unequivocally in Star Wars history so props for that I guess. Part of this movie's official designation on Wikipedia is "epic military science fiction" and I'd like to find whoever wrote that and introduce them to the epic military science fiction that is my fist. This movie premiered on my 21st birthday because it hates me. There's an entire subplot in this movie where we're supposed to admire Padme's political ingenuity because she contacts a bunch of Hutts via hologram and talks smack to them but it's completely ruined by bad scriptwriting and also I refuse to believe that not a single Hutt made a sexist remark to Natalie Portman.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

That whole meme about Jar Jar Binks being a Sith Lord is really overrated but I still laugh whenever I consider the actual menace of this movie being Jar Jar himself. He's so bad, I can't believe it. But one thing I think people forget is that after the initial string of events on Naboo leading to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan reaching Theed, he isn't quite as front-and-center atrocious. It's his stupidity very early on that's like genre-definingly terrible; at least later on in the movie enough tends to be happening around him that it's easier to tune him out. I don't think the film is quite as slow as some people say but mind you that means I think it's honey rather than molasses. Or molasses rather than honey. Which is faster? Who cares. Speaking of not caring, I don't care what happens to a lot of people in this movie, but it's super sad when Qui-Gon probably doesn't actually bang Shmi despite my headcanon. The climactic lightsaber duel is legendary and the throne room fight for Padme and CAPTAIN TANAKA is cool too but the gungan stuff is literally just Windows XP background but whatever. I have a soft spot for that dude who pilots the hero ship because he looks like he just walked out of bed in the year 1973 and thinks he's on the set of Spaceballs instead. This movie doesn't suck actually but it's not good.

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

You know like this movie has been around for such a long time now that I think people sometimes forget just how dumb the subtitle is relative to literally any other subtitle in the Skywalker Saga? The Phantom Menace sounds nice and scary. Attack of the Clones sounds like whatever the hell it is that people who haven't been introduced to good science fiction fare think that all science fiction is. Some bad Buck Rogers stuff served on a plate of bad going on here. Maybe that's the point -- George Lucas was a visionary so it's possible that he was aware this movie is bad. I don't think it's awful but it's not good. So many parts of this movie don't feel like a movie. Like realtalk they feel like purposefully slow sections in a longer-running TV show. Which is fine for TV shows but not fine when you've got like 40 minutes of nonstop walking around aimlessly as part of your movie. The Anakin/Padme romance makes me want to die which is like literally what Padme says? "I've been dying little by little since you came back into my life." THAT IS NOT A GOOD SIGN, WOMAN. I do cry a little when Shmi dies because she's such a better actress than Anakin (he's a bad actress in this movie). The Obi-Wan stuff is kind of cool once he's finally off Coruscant and Kamino is one of my favorite planets in Star Wars because rain makes everything better and it just never stops raining seriously go play Star Wars: Battlefront II for PS4 I will meet you on Kamino and we can have fun times together. Christopher Lee was a masterclass actor because he managed to deliver all of Dooku's lines without cracking up -- that's incredible. I like Jango Fett a lot and I think he's better than Boba and that sound effect from the Slave I's seismic charges is also amazing. This movie isn't good.

Indeed they are. Can't even begin to imagine how many hours I sunk into Xbox Battlefront II on those planets.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Kathleen Kennedy once hinted at the prospect of a trilogy of films for Alden Ehrenreich, whose surname I always misread as "Errinwright." I remember that as the moment that I began to realize that while all the bigoted, sexist smear campaigns against Kathleen Kennedy were gross, there is a kernel of truth to them -- she's maybe not the best at this. I think Alden is OK because he's playing a Han Solo before he's hardened which I guess follow-up films would have, well, followed. But also this film is amazingly unmemorable. The Kessel Run feels like the actual climax; oh lawd, they comin', back on the last planet when like three people knock out like three evil troopers or whatever? That's your actual climax? There's the cool fight with the cool weapon but honestly it's not even that cool. I do admire that they got Woody from Cheers out of retirement but I can literally not believe they brought Tessa Thompson of Westworld fame in as "Val" just to have her die stupidly at the end of what I can only label "act 1" in a movie remarkably disjointed and lacking any real punch. I called it before the movie came out that Han would lose against Lando the first time but win at the very end so if you'd like to send me a gift or something I do accept PayPal. I think this movie could have been worse but also it doesn't deserve much more than what it got at the box office -- it's anemic and pale and everything just feels like ticking off some Hollywood investor meeting box. "Oh look, Dio, a funny alien! Oh no, he's dead." Too bad, slugs: he wasn't even funny to begin with. The soundtrack gets a lot of praise for Solo which is ironic considering it isn't good. This movie isn't terrible but it also isn't good.
