i know that the feds look for the child to say something like they don't want to live with their parents anymore. it's possible they were asked this question and said they loved their parents. well it's just possible.

Ehhh. Kinda? My parents beat me with a belt but it didn't leave any mental impact. They did far worse via sheer, well-meaning ignorance.

Also I'm a sadomasochist now, but I think that was before the belt.

i was hit by a belt as a kid and it did absolutely nothing to me except make me upset. i think thats the case with a lot of kids; having stuff you like taken away or fun stuff disallowed was always always way more effective a punishment to me

its kind of amusing to me that most of the people i see that endorse physical punishment for kids that i know irl are some of the people who are the most fucked up and miserable people ive ever met, which makes me question why theyd want anyone to be like them. they also tend to be older people, and i wouldnt be surprised if it was more effective for them because less opportunity for alternative punishment existed back then

Yea, becuase sometimes, or most of the time trying to explain the implications of a wrong to a child and the impact it has on others and their future is a futile effort. But every kid understands a good a** whooping,

And speaking of a** woopings it's a pretty good alternative to locking youths away for most of their adult life. Singapore certainly has proven it's a effective system

That's not how it works. Obedience through fear is a thing, but it's short term satisfaction in exchange for long term damage.

What? Most kids are normal. If they're misbehaving, they'll eventually learn through other discipline means.

If your child is at the point that you have to physically hurt them to stop xyz behavior, it's likely because of shitty attitudes and behaviors passed down by the parent, or in many cases, meaning they have behavioral issues that need professional attention. Not a beating.

Its textbook physical abuse.

Im not saying it merits immediate removal of the child from the home, but its horribly antiquated and needs to go.

And some children are incredibly hard headed, inherently bratty, and do not respond well to or at all to certain, non physical disciplinary methods.

I cant stress this enough but beatings are not a go to, immediate punishment when kids misbehave. They are used either as a warning or last resort. Of course after the parents have properly explained why it's bad, they shouldn't do this or that, and what may happen.

Thats how most kids in my generation had it, but its not the way I would/will do things.

times change and theres literally so much stuff to take away (phone, video games, etc.) that it would be too much.

when I was growing up, my parents took away games, then going outside, and if I was still bad then I might get the belt

I mostly got hand spanks from grandparents and on occasion, a Donald duck paddle ball paddle from Grandma (ball missing).
Belt rarely.
All on butt of course, and never hard enough to do more than sting a bit.

The worst part was the talk my grandpa would give, a well meaning, kind, helpful talk about why what I did was wrong.
...it was the most dreadful boring thing for my ADD child mind, and was equal punishment.

I still love my grandparents dearly and don't think any less of them.

Obviously. The point is that fear and obedience DOES work. It also causes long term damage. Every study done on this confirms it. I don't see a single study saying it's beneficial. It's just some BS ignorant parents believe.

Prismsblade posted...

Yes, they're called behavioral issues that need professional intervention. Again, anything inherent comes from the parent.
