There was a lot of hype for this movie years ago but it under performed with critics, audiences and the box office. And i kinda agree i didn't really like it

It was fucking terrible.

Only cool part was when he got shot in the eye and the bullet flattened in on itself.

The teaser trailer was better than the entire movie.

His hair curl was so ridiculously cheesy and distracting. The acting was flat and boring. Lois was kind of a bitch through most of the film. Kevin Spacey was pretty decent, though. But that was also before the world saw him as some kind of sexual predator.

It just wasn't a good movie.

I never fully watched it, just saw bits and pieces, I just know Kumar was a bad guy who gets flattened.

I remember seeing it opening weekend in the theaters. Even as a younger kid who could eat that shit UP, I was still severely disappointed by pretty much everything

Ive always loved Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey but even they were hot garbage in this

I kinda liked it when it first came out, but it was very forgettable, and now I barely remember most of it.

Gotta be better than 3 or 4 tho

It was alright. If it had been beloved, I probably would be a bit more critical.

Ehh. I thought it was a lame and terrible movie that was pretty bad even in a franchise that had a movie like Superman IV in it. But then they went on to make Man of Steel and BvS, and Superman Returns sort of became a better movie by proxy.

It's still pretty lame, though.

I don't remember any hype.

Hype in the sense that it was a new Superman movie after nearly 20 years of none, hype in the sense that it was ignoring the continuity of Superman 3 and 4 but continuing directly on from Superman 2 (and thus wasn't really a full reboot), and hype in the sense that it was being directed by the guy who'd made two pretty good X-Men movies. When it was first announced, there was a fair bit of optimism for it.

And then it came out.

I would still put MoS above Returns despite having problems with it.

Either of them is leagues ahead of BvS though

I'd argue that MoS is a better movie in general, but it's a worse Superman movie (because it profoundly misunderstands who and what Superman IS).

Superman Returns, for all its flaws, at least has its heart in the right place.

I mostly agree with that.

I still think MoS could have been a good starting point for a new movie continuity, if literally anyone else had been at the helm of the sequels lol

I feel like it could have been a good starting point for new continuity if it had a different director who had done at least one or two more rewrite passes on the script. Cavill was excellent casting, but the tone was wrong.

The real problem is that the Superman films suffered from WB desperately trying to shoehorn it into whatever thing was trendy at the time. It was hurt badly by the attempt to make it like the Nolan Batman films (in spite of the two characters being radically different), and rushing to push the crossover to try and cash in on Avengers-money (while doing it in precisely the wrong way, because they were in too much of a hurry to do individual movies) meant it couldn't really be salvaged.

Ideally they should have gone more down the route they did with Shazam, where they allowed the character to set the tone of the movie, rather than forcing the movie to fit a preestablished tone it wasn't right for. And keeping crossover BS to a minimum until you establish the characters in a way where the audience WANTS to see them cross over.

At least some things could have been addressed in a potential sequel, had they not gone in the direction they did.

Nothing would ever make me agree with their portrayal of Jonathan Kent though
