One of the maintenance guys. He called me last week acting kind of panicky, saying it was an emergency and he needed me rent him a room that night. He explained that it wasn't for him, but someone he knows desperately needed a place for the night.

I knew we weren't supposed to rent to locals, but sometimes employees do get to stay here if they need a place. That's what he wanted to do, get the room with his employee status and just use it for them instead. I reluctantly agreed, but regretted it immediately when they arrived.

Apparently from their discussion at the desk there was some kind of domestic disturbance they were trying avoid. So I figured trouble would likely follow, and it did but in a different way than I imagined.

After my shift ended the maintenance guy called and said he was coming in. My co-worker told him to stay home, but he showed up anyway and used his maintenance key to access their room and supposedly sleep with her? Which I guess is what caused the domestic issue to begin with since this girl was cheating.

He got fired for it yesterday and I just learned it was because I rented him that room. I tried explaining to my manager that it was my fault and my decision to rent it to him, but she just kept saying they already knew all the details and that it's not my fault and that I'm not in trouble. I told her I just wanted to accept responsibility for my part, but that just kind of got dismissed as a non-issue.

Ugh... If only I had a spine and had told him no like I was supposed to. Or a brain and thought to call my manager first.

That's what my manager said. Still, it wouldn't have happened if I told him no.

Sounds like he deserved it, and you didn't. Hopefully it won't be long before someone better suited fills the open position, and the experience makes a better person out of your former fellow employee.

Wait, so did you sleep with her as well?

Otherwise I don't see you having done anything wrong here.

I mean, you could get in trouble if it's a solid rule and you allowed him to break it, but he still is the one who broke the rules, and so should pay the price.

If anything you should be told firmly not to do that again.

you're not necessarily required to be absolutely perfect in all circumstances; for one thing, that's impossible. you had a quick judgment call to make, and you may or may not have made the right choice.

the other guy on the other hand made an unambiguous and clearly motivated choice to commit a particularly egregious violation of policy.

if I were you, I would ask whether or not the call you made was right or wrong, so that you know for sure going forward, apologize for making the wrong call this time (if you did), and next time use this experience to make a better decision.

in other words, being in trouble VS not being in trouble, who cares, just make sure to learn from this going forward.

Technically, Koga is fine and didnt really break the rules. The employees are allowed to check out rooms to other employees, which he did. But the guy just let the girl use it...

I warned the next shift in case there was trouble, and told him to tell the managers what I did. I like to be up front and honest about this stuff.

I was told tonight that it was definitely the wrong call to make. I'm really not used to making such big mistakes and having no consequences for them. Really feels like I was at least partially responsible for the situation, which ended up with him losing his job... and I just told to call the manager next time first and that I'm not in trouble at all. Feels wrong.

That's because it is a none issue. You rented it out to a employee and that is allowed. If he uses it the way he shouldn't then that's on him.

Yeah we can, but mostly under certain conditions. Like severe weather limiting their ability to travel or working several shifts in a row and expected to be back in. They usually get the room for free, but he paid for the room, he just wanted me to actually let them in.

Seriously though you in no way got the guy fired. You didnt tell him to get a room for her and use his position as an employee to go bang her and create a whole scandalous incident. You reluctantly made a judgment call to ignore a policy to help someone. Thats the worst someone could fault you for but that in no way makes you responsible for the choices of your former coworker.
