Then try it out? It's not a bad game but if you don't know what you need to do its impossible.

His criticisms are fair. How badly that hampers your experience is going to vary based on what you enjoy about playing games.

Just get one of the modded versions that takes out all the bad things about it.

This there's a really good version out there that gives the NPC's actual dialogue that helps, gets rid of the annoying freeze when it switches to night and a few other things like that

Well, I am the one who actually liked the "weird" sequels on NES. I liked Zelda II, Super Mario 2, and this game more than there precursors at the time. Now, I would say only Zelda I has reverted back to being my preferred if I had to choose.

Anyway, yeah, Castlevania II is weird, but certainly playable. I managed to beat it, which meant a lot to me since I could never beat the first game. I guess my fondness for Castlevania II was helped by my sub to Nintendo Power back then and having instant access (pre-internet) to a walk-through. :)

I say give it a try...and if you want to keep real old school, get the Nintendo Power with the front cover that has Simon holding a decapitated Dracula head.

He's the last person anyone should take critical advise from a video game on. See this video specifically how he talks about super Castlevania

It's not that bad honestly, it is a traditional NES action adventure which most people might consider annoying, but I don't mind them too much. I will say you probably should play the game with a walkthrough nearby because it is really cryptic on what you need to do to beat it. I consider it on par with other NES games like Zelda II, Battle of Olympus, Goonies II, and Rygar.

Plus James has said in the past that Castlevania II is actually one of his favorite games, he just made the video to get a laugh out of his friends who thought he was crazy for liking it.

I agree with his video on Super Castlevania. The sub weapons were pretty useless in that game, even though the game itself was really good. Not sure if you watched the video all the way through, but he says the game is good, but they should've either ditched the sub weapons and concentrate on new mechanics with the whip, or make some relevant sub weapons for the game.

Yeah people forget he's a form of satire.

I certainly wouldn't say it's a good game, easily the worst of the classic Castlevanias but it's nowhere near being among the worst games on the NES.

It's got some good points, what little music there is is all excellent. It tried some stuff like the day and night cycle at a time when that was new.

But it's downsides definitely drag it down. Still it's a piss easy game and not very long if you know what you are doing. I had fun with it so that's all that matters in the end.

Yeah, got to agree on being the worst Castlevania. The 64 game was not that great either.

I think Friday the 13th is the worst game I ever played on the NES. Only game I ever took back

He's absolutely right about Super Castlevania. The sub weapons are pretty much worthless because the whip is way too good.
