You don't plan ahead properly, pay attention to what your opponents are looking for or notice the right kind of patterns they're following.

Shooting games like Battlefield or CoD I do alright but fighting games I get wrecked online, even though I can beat all my friends locally, online fighting games are a whole nother animal.

Nah man practice doesn't do anything. Like I'm Silver 2 in CSGO with 700 Competitive Wins and I've been playing Pokemon for the past 20 years yet can't win online for balls.

Most games are some combination of the following

strategy: how good your plan, and play style is.

Adaptability: how well you can shift your strategy, or react on the fly when it's not working, or is getting countered, and how well you can exploit gaps in there strategy.

Skill: core gameplay skill, reaction time, hand eye coordination, map/weapon/character/move knowledge.

I just cant be good at video games either and Ive been playing since the 80s. I mainly dont play games online because they usually cant pause and I live with my mother who tells me to do something every five seconds.

some people use modded controllers. not possible for a semi-auto to fire faster than full-auto

I'm relatively poor at Counterstrike, despite being good at shooters in general, because I physically have poor eyesight so I can't snipe as well as others, but I compensated for that by improving my pistol and smg game.

This is huge. Being able to predict the other players moment and strategy, and keeping yours from being predictable can let you compete against players with way greater physical skill.

I press button commands too fast or before the right icon appears. Try attacking by moving in with a back step planned and whiff the enemy. Sometimes characters have longer cool down animations. Try to catch them after a combo. However dont let them do combos to close the space between you. Punching or kicking low is first done to break a defensive stance. Dodging a jump attack can be as simple as ducking or as complex as a ground high attack counter. try reading or listening to The Art of War a few times and tell me how you are being stopped.

Heh, I do this sometimes in Dota2 and the WORST is when playing Enigma since you be break out of your own ultimate by doing that... and since Enigma has one of the strongest and most visible ultimates it's very clear to all other players when you screw it up
