My wife and I have figured out a way to kill our debt in a year. We are working 4 jobs and we owe like $18k on our car, $20k left on her student loans, and about $25k on my student loans.

I hate what I do because it's programming in corporate. Every fucking thing I do is a band-aid solution. I feel like we're in too deep for anyone to actually give a crap about my opinion. It's making me loathe using computers in general, even at home.

I've been doing a lot of "soul searching" and have had a few mental breakdowns, and I'm pretty tough so it kind of makes me question my mental health if I keep reaching my limit. I can't keep bringing my attitude home with me, it's not fair to my wife. I'm not stressed from working too much, I just hate what I do when I'm AT work.

How do you guys find your dream job if you're not even sure what it is?

Working in a team is great! It always helps to have someone else to blame.

You might just be working too much

Paying off your debt is great but stress can really do a number on your health physically and mentally. Its hard to put a price on your well being

It's like what Zangulus said, working for morons can absolutely drain any enthusiasm for a job. Having incompetent bosses can take a place that is enjoyable to work for and run it into the ground, leaving everyone to wonder how the hell anyone is still employed there (let alone how it's still standing).

How do you know where I work?! Its like you described it perfectly.

Had a few myself. Worst I ever had did the usual "things are going to change around here" speech her first day, then proceeded to tell us how none of us were important and could be replaced easily at any time

Disregarded a report by the Department of Health saying patient to staff ratio should be 5:1 for 40 patients (we had 8:1 at the time) and had just hired 17 new people to help with staff shortage. She felt that was too high and wasteful.

Chased everyone out pretty much immediately so it was 20:1 staff to patient ratio within 2 months and let every new person go. Implemented the most asinine policies and treated the workplace like a prison. Let people die on her watch and shrugged. "Someone will take their spot. I'm not worried."

You get the idea

Had the same problem growing up. I would suggest you find a job close to your heart. Something you are passionate about.

In my case it was a job in assisting people with special needs. But I didn't figure that out right away. I need it to try a few different things before I found something that fit. Maybe you need to give yourself some time to try out some new experiences. Throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks?

Of course you've got debt to worry about. Guess it's a matter of priorities for you. Maybe see if you can't get through the year first? It's not that long, in the grand scheme of things. It will go fast.

There is no point in life if your not enjoying it, and helping those around you do the same. Do not work a job you hate, even if you have kids, you can find a job (hopefully with the help of a partner also working) that will pay enough to support them, you just might not live in as big a house (or even end up renting a room etc).

Sell your car if your making payments, and buy a cheap one, so you don't have to make payments on it. It's not worth working a job you hate, just to drive around something that looks brand new, and honestly you can get cars that look brand new for 3k or so (mine was 3.3k but ended up being almost 4 after taxes and fees etc. It is a 2003 Saturn in perfect condition and I have driven it for 2 years with no problems).

Don't waste your life being unhappy, you have a wife, you are lucky, both of you should do jobs you love, and hopefully have time left over to enjoy each other, explore the world (Even if it's on a budget) and have time for your children if you have them.

Too many people just keep slogging away in jobs they hate, barely wanting to exist, and hoping things will eventually get better. Make them get better now. You don't need tons of money, you need tons of happiness.

Nah, I loved my job as a radio DJ, especially the 1st place I worked. Most fun I ever had at a job and I always looked forward to coming in the next day. Only thing I didn't like was the pay. Pay was shit.

But it was easy, relaxed, had some good bosses, could pick up as many hours as In wanted and I got to eventually enjoy the music

It really isn't. Liking everything about your job all the time is unrealistic, but there's absolutely no reason you can't generally enjoy what you do for a living. In fact, if you don't, it's unlikely you'll be able to muster up the passion needed to do a good job.

Indeed. Often it's not even the work you're doing that's killing you, but ultimately how you are managed and the work culture.
